This year, the spotlight is especially on the talented players from the West Sioux and Bishop Heelan high schools, representing their respective teams in a proud fashion.

West Sioux’s Glory: A First-Ever State Title

West Sioux’s Class 1A championship squad showcased a stellar performance this season, with three standout players grabbing the attention of the all-state selectors. Among them, Jonathon Flores Topete and Tranquilino Flores Topete are basking in the glory of their first-team honors, thanks to their impressive combined total of 31 goals this season. This remarkable achievement was one of the key factors leading the Falcons to claim their very first state title, marking a historic moment for the program.

Jonathon Flores Topete took the lead for the team with a jaw-dropping 22 goals along with contributing 10 assists. This brings his total points to an impressive 54 at the end of his junior season. But he wasn’t alone in this success; Oscar Robles, a bright sophomore captain, also earned a second-team all-state nomination after netting 21 goals and leading his team with an astounding 19 assists. With a record of 16-3-1, it’s clear West Sioux made quite the splash in the league!

Bishop Heelan’s Stellar Performance

Meanwhile, across town, the Bishop Heelan Class 2A runner-up squad made waves with three of its senior athletes being honored as first-team all-state selections. The dynamic trio of Cesar DeLeon, Sergio Mijangos, and Andres Gonzalez truly shone throughout the season. Mijangos stole the spotlight with a jaw-dropping 47 goals, leading all players in the state. Not to be outdone, Gonzalez also made headlines by leading the state with 27 assists and adding 21 goals to his impressive record. DeLeon played a vital part in solidifying the team’s defense while securing two goals of his own.

Bishop Heelan finished the season holding a respectable record of 18-3, and their trio of stars was supported by honorable mention players like Dylan Karnes, who contributed three goals and six assists, and goalie Landon Block, who was solid between the posts, allowing only 13 goals during his time on the field.

But that’s not all the acclaim coming from Siouxland! Sioux Center’s Benjamin RuizLira and Cristofer Marquez both earned second-team all-state honors, with Marquez leading the team with an impressive 17 goals. Over in Le Mars, senior Jovany Kabongo secured a place on the Class 3A all-state second team, finishing as the runner-up in scoring for the Missouri River Activities Conference with a total of 33 goals. Meanwhile, Spencer’s Romeo Alvarez also found his name on the all-state second team, racking up 11 goals and five assists in just 17 games.

Honorable Mentions Abound

A total of five players from the 1A classification received honorable mention, including Unity Christian seniors Asa Byl and Traevin Van Beek, alongside junior Brennan Obbink, who collectively scored 16 goals and provided nine assists. Honorable mentions also went to Western Christian seniors Aidan Carlson and Lane Massen, with Carlson leading his team with seven assists.

In the 2A category, Heelan’s Gabe Newberg registered 17 goals to earn an honorable mention, as did Sioux Center’s Casen Jahn and Kyle TeStroete. Likewise, notable mentions for the 3A category included Spencer’s Brady Vreeman and Camden Mosher as well as Storm Lake’s Raymond Hernandez, who managed 15 goals in just 16 games.
