Torrington High School Reclaims Helmet Trophy in Thrilling Thanksgiving Showdown

Watertown – In a game packed with excitement and drama, Torrington High School emerged victorious over Watertown High School with a final score of 55-48 on Wednesday night. This thrilling encounter took place in the much-anticipated Thanksgiving rivalry that had fans on the edge of their seats.

The game started with an unexpected twist when the field lights at Watertown went out just before kickoff, leaving both teams in darkness for about 20 minutes. Once play resumed, fans witnessed a high-scoring affair that kept everyone guessing until the final whistle.

Watertown’s star quarterback, Brayden Gambee, threw five touchdown passes during the game, nearly leading his team to victory. However, Torrington’s powerful rushing game proved to be the difference maker, especially during the second half when they scored a staggering 41 points.

At halftime, Watertown held a 28-14 lead, but Torrington came out strong in the second half. Aiden Hansen initiated the comeback with an impressive 80-yard run for a touchdown. Quarterback Micheal Aboua then connected on a 41-yard pass to Kaiden Johnson, followed by Johnson scoring on a 4-yard run, which flipped the score in favor of Torrington at 35-28.

As the game progressed, Hansen delivered the game-winning touchdown with a 17-yard run, sealing the victory for Torrington and reclaiming the coveted Helmet Trophy after a two-year absence. Torrington now leads the series with a record of 30-27-1.

Torrington’s coach, Gaitan Rodriguez, expressed his pride in the team’s determination, stating, “I’m speechless. I’m so proud of this team’s grittiness.” Both teams will now prepare for the playoffs, as Watertown, with a record of 7-3, heads into Class M, and Torrington, boasting a record of 9-1, moves into Class MM.
