Southern Valley Eagles Cut Season Short

LINCOLN, Neb. – A high school football team in southern Nebraska is cutting its season short, the school announced on Tuesday. The Southern Valley Eagles, an 8-man football team located in Oxford, is canceling the remainder of the season due to the lack of available players. This decision affects both the varsity and junior varsity teams.

Josh Lanik, the school’s principal, shared the news in a press release stating, “Please know that we did not come to this decision lightly, but we could not in good conscience put the few players we have left in that position.” The Eagles struggled this season, remaining winless through five games, which contributed to the difficulties in fielding a competitive team.

The cancellation means that the Eagles will not be playing their scheduled game against Hi-Line (Eustis-Farnam/Elwood) this Friday. This marks a disappointing end for the young athletes, who were hoping to turn their season around. The team’s struggles reflect a larger issue that many smaller schools face, with dwindling numbers affecting not only the Eagles but potentially other programs as well.

As the Eagles plan to regroup and focus on the future, players, coaches, and fans alike will have to reflect on a tough season that ended earlier than expected. The school hopes to build back up in the next season and return stronger. In the meantime, the community is encouraged to support their team through this challenging time.
