Columbia, S.C. – The South Carolina Gamecocks softball team has made history by being selected as the No. 8 seed for the upcoming NCAA Tournament, announced on Sunday night, May 11. This marks the first time in the modern history of the program that they have earned a national top-8 seed. The team will host the Columbia Regional at the Carolina Softball Stadium from May 16 to May 18.
The Gamecocks secured an at-large bid to the tournament, adding to their rich tradition as they make their 25th all-time appearance in the NCAA tournament and their first under head coach Ashley Chastain Woodard. This season, they concluded the SEC Tournament by reaching the Quarterfinals, showcasing their competitive spirit and skill throughout the year.
In the Columbia Regional, South Carolina will face the Elon Phoenix on Friday at 5:30 p.m., with the match being broadcast live on ESPN+. Earlier in the day, Virginia will take on North Florida at 3 p.m. This matchup against Elon is particularly interesting, as the Gamecocks have a strong track record against them, winning their last encounter in 2021 with a score of 14-1. Overall, South Carolina leads the all-time series against Elon with a record of 3-1.
The Gamecocks also boast impressive records against their other regional opponents, going 7-1 against North Florida and 34-5 against Virginia, including victories at the start of the 2025 season.
