SEDAN, KANSAS – As the excitement builds for Super Bowl LIX, one small-town official is about to make history. Mark Stewart, a line judge for the upcoming championship game, reflects on his incredible journey from the tiny community of Sedan, Kansas, to the grandest stage in American sports.
“The Super Bowl is the pinnacle of achievement in our profession,” Stewart remarked, acknowledging the significance of this moment. He understands the opportunity he has earned, stating, “It’s an opportunity that’s not lost on me.” His path to the NFL started back in the early ’90s after graduating from Pittsburg State University. It was a friend’s suggestion to attend an officiating meeting that set him on this course.
Stewart, who had previously played sports, was looking for a way to stay involved with athletics. “It was just a chance to be part of a team again,” he said, recognizing that there was a void in his life after his playing days ended. His officiating career began in junior high and high school before advancing through various levels, including NAIA, JUCO, Division II, FCS, and FBS football. For Stewart, every game he officiated, no matter the level, has contributed to his growth.
“Every one of those games at every stop has been just as important to me as this one I’m getting ready to work,” Stewart said. This perspective helps him handle the high stakes of officiating a Super Bowl. Stewart grew up in a place where his high school graduating class had only 36 students. For someone from such humble beginnings, being part of Super Bowl LIX feels surreal.
“People from here don’t get to do the kind of things that I’ve gotten to do,” he shared, underscoring the uniqueness of his achievement. As the big day approaches, Stewart carries with him not only his expertise but also the pride of representing his small-town roots on the national stage.
