New Orleans is gearing up for a exciting quarterback competition this summer following the retirement of Derek Carr. The Saints’ front office shook things up when they selected Tyler Shough in the second round of the recent NFL Draft. Shough, who has already begun to make a name for himself, is now preparing to step into a starting role in a season full of new challenges.
At the rookie minicamp, Shough shared his thoughts, saying, “For me, it’s just going through the same process for minicamp, trying to learn the playbook and get to know my teammates as much as I can and do everything I can to continue to get better.” He was informed of Carr’s retirement by coach Kellen Moore but quickly turned his focus back to the field, eager to make the most of his opportunity.
Shough stands at a towering 6-foot-5 and weighs 219 pounds. He previously played at Louisville, posting impressive stats with 3,195 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, and only six interceptions in his final college season. Despite facing injuries, including collarbone issues in 2021 and 2022 and a broken leg in 2023, Shough has shown resilience and determination. His experience gives him an edge as he competes against fellow quarterbacks Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener for the starting position.
Shough remains optimistic as he approaches the competition. “That’s all you can ask for is an opportunity, at any position,” he said. “I’m going to treat it the same way, as if whoever is on the roster, I’ve got to continue to grow and get better.” With a young and inexperienced QB room, he knows this is his chance to prove himself and contribute to the team’s success.
As the Saints continue their offseason preparations, all eyes will be on Shough and the quarterback battle that is set to unfold. The upcoming summer will provide valuable insight into who will take the field as New Orleans’ starting quarterback come the start of the season.
