Middletown, Delaware is currently under scrutiny as the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) investigates possible violations regarding player eligibility linked to residency issues in their successful football program. The inquiry was prompted by reports suggesting that some players on Middletown’s 2024 Class 3A state championship team may not have actually lived at addresses within the Appoquinimink School District, which is a requirement for attendance.
As part of the investigation, the DIAA received information that indicates several of these players might be residing at addresses that belong to other individuals or families, not their own. This raises concerns about compliance with the regulations set by the DIAA regarding student-athlete eligibility and residency.
According to David Baylor, the executive director of the DIAA, an official investigation is underway and Middletown has been notified. Additionally, the school is conducting its own review of the registration documents for the players involved. Middletown’s football program has enjoyed a positive reputation and has strong community support, yet it has recently seen an influx of new players transferring from other schools.
Current rules allow students in Delaware to attend public schools, like Middletown, outside their local district under the School Choice program, but these students must apply and be accepted. Moreover, students who switch schools must do so with the intention that their relocation is permanent and not primarily for athletic reasons.
The DIAA has recently updated its rules to discourage students from transferring for athletic advantage and to limit recruitment opportunities. This includes the use of a DIAA Transfer Tracking Form, which helps ensure that residency declarations align with established regulations. The ongoing investigation is looking closely at residency and eligibility issues, particularly concerning students who previously attended private schools in New Castle County.
Baylor has assured that the investigation will be thorough, as ensuring compliance with these rules is a priority. The outcome of this inquiry could have significant implications for Middletown’s football program and its players.
