Meeker, Colorado – The Meeker High School softball team has hit a bit of a rough patch this season, currently sitting at a disheartening 2-12 record. As the players step onto the field, they find themselves reflecting on missed opportunities and learning experiences with each game that passes.

Home Opener Disappointment

Recently, the team faced off against the Rifle Bears in their much-anticipated home opener. Unfortunately, it ended in a tough loss, with the scoreboard reading 18-5 against them. This was not the first time the Cowboys clashed with the Bears this season; their initial matchup had already resulted in a significant defeat of 15-3.

Despite the score, there has been a light at the end of the tunnel in the form of improvement. Players and coaches alike have taken note that they performed better during the home opener in comparison to the season’s first battle against Rifle. Yet, there is still some work to do, especially in terms of improving defensive capabilities and reducing fielding errors.

Standout Performers

In a season where challenges abound, there have been bright spots. Junior catcher Kayla Castillo shone during the game against the Rifle Bears, finishing with a solid 1-for-2 batting record, driving in an RBI, reaching base on three occasions, and stealing two bases. Furthermore, she recorded a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage — a true testament to her defensive skills.

Adding to the list of strong performances was senior pitcher Addie Knowles, who kept her cool on the mound, pitching all five innings and facing 40 batters. She struck out five, while also contributing offensively with a hit and an RBI. Senior Emma Bauer played a dependable role with a hit and a double, and taking on the most defensive opportunities with a total of eight chances.
