Manchester Invitational Showcases Local Cross Country Talent
Manchester recently buzzed with excitement as the 50th Manchester Invitational took center stage at the scenic Derryfield Park. With a whopping 103 schools from all six New England states participating, this event turned into a thrilling midseason competition for high school cross country teams. The invitational served as an important marker with division titles looming on the horizon, set to take place on October 25. And boy, did our local runners shine!
Hopkinton Takes the Spotlight
Leading the charge was Hopkinton junior Maddy Lane, who dazzled the crowd by clinching the Girls Small School title with an impressive time of 18:53.1. Lane finished a remarkable 31 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor, Zoe Carroll from York, Maine. Not only did she secure victory, but she also achieved a personal best, significantly improving upon her previous year’s time of 19:28.4.
Maddy has been on fire this season, entering the race with an undefeated streak after her recent triumph at the Bobcat Invitational, where she also set a new course record. Despite the unseasonably warm temperatures and dry conditions that made the course a tad more challenging, Lane showcased grit and determination to lead her team. The Hopkinton girls placed sixth overall, proudly marking them as the best New Hampshire team at the event.
Supporting Lane were her fellow teammates, including Maisie Emerson, who finished 28th with a time of 21:31, and Rose Afflerbach, who crossed the finish line in 31st place at 21:44. Their efforts contributed significantly to the team’s standing, even as Haddam-Killingworth High School from Connecticut claimed the team title for the Girls Small Schools category with 117 points.
Strong Performances from Coe-Brown
Turning our attention to the boys’ division, the Coe-Brown Northwood Academy boys’ team also made waves, winning the Boys Small School title among a competitive field of 41 teams. The talent on display was neatly rounded out by Concord’s senior Josiah Conley, who achieved a personal course-record time of 16:34.5 to snag second place in the Boys Large School event. His performance was eclipsed only by the overall winner, Bocelli Howland-Vlahakis from Phillips Exeter, who finished with an outstanding time of 15:43.3.
The Concord High School boys wrapped up their race with a 20th place finish overall, accumulating 430 points. Meanwhile, junior Mahalie Burdette led the Concord girls’ team, finishing 36th at 21:04. The girls’ team managed to secure 13th place out of 25 teams competing in the division.
