As the off-season moves forward, Jacksonville is gearing up for some significant changes to its coaching staff, especially in the offensive coordinator position. With only one head coaching vacancy still open in the NFL, focus is now on filling these crucial OC roles across the league. Sources indicate that former NFL head coach and current Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, 61, is a prime target for several teams, including the Jaguars and the Houston Texans.

After recently leading Ohio State to a national championship, Kelly has maintained connections with the NFL, having been mentioned for various roles over the years, particularly after his tenure at UCLA. While he coached the Philadelphia Eagles for three seasons and spent a year with the San Francisco 49ers, Kelly has been back in college football since 2018.

For the Jaguars, there is genuine interest in pairing Kelly with new head coach Liam Coen. However, the dynamics of play-calling remain unclear, especially since Coen is expected to handle the offense himself. Meanwhile, the Texans recently parted ways with offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, and Kelly appears to be a strong candidate for that position as well. Kelly previously coached DeMeco Ryans during Ryans’ playing days in Philadelphia, which adds to his appeal for Houston.

Currently, there are 11 offensive coordinator vacancies across the NFL. The New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns have already filled their OC positions, while the San Francisco 49ers are anticipated to announce Klay Kubiak as their new offensive coordinator soon. Other teams like the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders, Green Bay Packers, and New York Giants might have openings depending on their upcoming interview processes.

In addition to Kelly, other coaches are making moves. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers conducted virtual interviews with candidates such as Marcus Brady and Grant Udinski, while internal candidates like Josh Grizzard are also under consideration. The landscape is continually shifting, with significant interest in nicknamed hot names without confirmed spots.

As teams look to finalize their offensive strategies, the next few weeks are bound to bring more news and excitement in NFL coaching hires.
