Eastpointe High School Football Team to Forfeit Season Finale
Eastpointe, Mich. – A tough season has come to an unexpected end for the Eastpointe High School varsity football team. After struggling throughout the season, the team is scheduled to forfeit its final game against Brandon High School, which was set to take place this Friday night. The team’s roster has shrunk dramatically, dwindling from about 45 players to fewer than 15 players, making it impossible to compete safely.
Coach Aaron Davis expressed his disappointment, saying, “You don’t want to do that. You want to make sure you can provide as many experiences and opportunities for not only the upperclassmen to get film and things like that. But at the end of the day, priority is safety and we couldn’t safely play in that game.” This season, Eastpointe struggled to find success, finishing with an 0-8 record, with no close games along the way. The team faced significant challenges, especially since seven of the nine teams they played are playoff qualifiers.
Coach Davis highlighted the difficulty of a team largely made up of freshmen playing against more experienced juniors and seniors. “So when you’ve got a freshman team being introduced to high school football and everybody that you play is in the playoffs, it’s kinda tough,” he noted.
Adding to the challenge, Eastpointe High School does not have a junior varsity team, meaning the players are primarily freshmen. Despite the struggles this season, Coach Davis has emphasized the importance of nurturing camaraderie and resilience. “We’ve been taking it as lessons. Culturally, we built the relationships, the bonds, the brotherhood. We’ll roll that into the winter and get into the weight room as soon as we’re able to and plan to build for a better season next year,” he said.
As the Eastpointe football team turns its attention to rebuilding for next season, they remain hopeful for improved performance and new opportunities. The forfeit may mark the end of this season, but it is clear that the focus will soon shift toward development and preparation for the future.
