Indianapolis Colts Running Back Salvon Ahmed Suffers Injury During Practice
Indianapolis, IN – In a concerning turn of events during Sunday’s practice, Colts running back Salvon Ahmed sustained a severe lower right leg injury after being hit by a controversial illegal hip-drop tackle. The incident occurred during a developmental segment of the morning practice where tackling was allowed. Ahmed received the ball on a hand-off and broke free, but was quickly pursued and brought down from behind by undrafted safety Trey Washington.
Medical personnel were quickly on the scene, carting Ahmed off the field before taking him to a local hospital for X-rays. Reports indicate that Ahmed was in intense pain when trainers arrived. Head coach Shane Steichen commented on the incident, saying, “Never want to see that happen. I know we don’t encourage hip-drop tackles. I know Trey’s down in the dumps, and I don’t think he’s trying to do that.” Steichen also emphasized the importance of creating an edge and toughness through live tackling during training camp.
The NFL has already banned hip-drop tackles for the upcoming 2024 season due to the serious injuries that have arisen from this type of play. Ahmed joined the Colts’ practice squad in October 2024 and signed a reserve/futures contract in January. He previously played for the Miami Dolphins, accumulating 593 rushing yards and five touchdowns over 38 career games.
With injured players having a significant impact, the team is now looking to fill backup running back positions behind veteran Jonathan Taylor. Competing for those spots are fifth-round rookie DJ Giddens, Khalil Herbert, and Tyler Goodson. The outcome of Ahmed’s injury will certainly shape the dynamics of the Colts’ roster as they head into preseason.
