Gardner Gears Up for the First Annual Coach Mike Lawrence Twilight Run

Mark your calendars, everyone! Gardner is buzzing with excitement as it prepares for the first annual Coach Mike Lawrence Twilight Run on November 1. This special event is more than just a fun run; it’s a heartfelt tribute to a remarkable coach and a beloved member of the community who has touched countless lives throughout his impressive career.

Honoring a Coaching Legend

Coach Mike Lawrence has dedicated an astounding 47 years of his life to the sport, coaching both cross-country and track and field teams at Gardner Middle and High School. Unfortunately, due to his ongoing battle with Parkinson’s Disease, Lawrence has had to step away from coaching. But his spirit and legacy continue to inspire current and former athletes alike, making this event all the more meaningful.

A Glimpse into a Stellar Career

Lawrence’s journey in athletics began at Narragansett High School, where he was a standout three-time state medalist in the 600-yard run. Not only did he shine as an athlete, serving as captain of the cross-country, indoor track, and outdoor track teams during his junior and senior years, but he also went on to compete at the collegiate level at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), where he earned the title of All-New England in the mile relay.

His love for coaching began shortly after graduating when he had the opportunity to coach at his alma mater, Narragansett, where he guided his youngest brother, John. In 2003, Lawrence joined the coaching staff at Gardner, where he made a significant impact, mentoring middle school cross-country athletes and overseeing the boys’ indoor and outdoor track teams.

A Team Effort

The coaching community in Gardner is rallying together to make this event a success. Coach Ken Pelletier, who leads the boys’ cross-country and girls’ track and field teams, is among those who have great respect for Lawrence’s contributions to the program. Together, Lawrence and Pelletier worked hand in hand, creating a nurturing environment that emphasized both competition and fun.

John Lawrence reflects fondly on their time together, emphasizing the importance of cultivating a love for running while still pushing athletes to excel. With a focus on development, they maintained a calm and enjoyable atmosphere during practices, allowing young athletes to thrive without excessive pressure.

Tina Bettez, the vice president of the Gardner Track and Cross-Country Booster Club, praises Lawrence’s knack for keeping things positive—even through challenging times. He was known for his playful “Fun Friday” practices, incorporating engaging activities like tag and scavenger hunts to make training enjoyable, all while instilling valuable lessons in teamwork and motivation.

Run for a Good Cause

The Coach Mike Lawrence Twilight Run promises a delightful evening filled with community spirit. Runners can choose between a one-mile kids’ fun run and a 5K race, both taking place on the beautiful Gardner campus. Expect some extra sparkle with glow sticks and exciting activities planned to enhance this memorable experience.
