Last week, the Trojans tennis team showcased their skills at the highly competitive NIAA Class 3A Singles and Doubles playoffs held at Bishop Gorman High School in Summerlin. With high hopes and a mix of excitement and nerves, the talented players stepped on the court ready to represent their school.

Girls’ Singles Success with Chanel Anthony

The girls’ team sent some of their best players to the 3A Southern Girls Individuals and Doubles playoffs with a keen eye on victory. One standout star was Chanel Anthony, who qualified for the Class 3A State Girls Singles Playoffs happening on Friday, October 24 at 1 p.m. She’s set to face Churchill County’s Jeana Lee from Fallon, NV. Fans have their fingers crossed for her to bring home the win!

Boys’ Singles Highlights

Over on the boys’ side, senior Lucas Johnson made a strong showing in the initial rounds. He defeated Coral Academy’s Pradyumna Aiyangar with a stellar score of 6-1, 6-0. Meanwhile, sophomore Jace Eichner also had a triumphant start by winning against Moapa Valley’s Matthew Marshall with a score of 6-0, 6-1 in the round of 16 singles playoffs. However, it was a tough climb for both players after they faced some serious competition in the quarterfinals.

Lucas Johnson met the defending two-time Class 3A singles champion Ido Goren from Adelson, but after a fiercely contested battle, he was unfortunately eliminated with a score of 6-0, 6-1. Jace Eichner, touching upon the same challenging path, lost in the quarterfinals to Coral Academy’s Jackson Moll, ending his playoff journey with a score of 6-2, 6-0.

Another duo, Chase Hanson and Taysom Christensen, found themselves struggling as they were knocked out in the first round by Adelson’s Jacob Nikhman and Lior Goren. Their teammates Ethan Johnson and Nick Watson also faced an uphill battle, losing to Virgin Valley’s Justin and Logan Andrus with a score of 6-0, 6-1.

Yet, not all hope was lost! Juan Carlos Rodriguez-Ortiz shone brightly by advancing to the quarterfinals after defeating Boulder City’s Tate Crine and Gavin Gross with a nail-biting score of 7-6 (6), 6-3. However, the Andrus brothers would ultimately put an end to the boys’ team’s desire for a 3A Southern title, despite a remarkable season with just one loss.

The Girls’ Performance

On the girls’ side, Aurora Bowers faced a tough challenge and was knocked out by Boulder City’s Brooklyn Koster. However, the spotlight shone on Nyomi Skinner, who fought through her match against Virgin Valley’s Hadley Robison, winning with stunning scores of 6-1 and 6-2. Unfortunately, in the quarterfinals, she met her match against American Heritage’s Nathaya Fernando, narrowly losing in a tense contest that ended with scores of 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3.

As for Chanel Anthony, her time on the court was nothing short of impressive. She crushed her first match against Virgin Valley’s Halle Abbott with a dominant score of 6-0, 6-0 and continued her winning streak by defeating Boulder City’s Harmony Cook 6-4, 6-2. In the semifinals, however, she faced formidable opponent Adelson’s Allegra Weir and lost with a score of 6-1, 6-0.

Despite the setback, Anthony held her head high, securing third place in the Class 3A singles playoffs by claiming victory in a rematch against Fernando with scores of 6-2, 6-4.

Coach’s Reflections

Reflecting on the season, Head Coach Michael Dela Rosa proudly acknowledged the team’s hard work and commitment while emphasizing the need for improvement as they set their sights on next season’s state tournament.
