Pioneer High School Cross Country Team Shines in Recent Meets

In the bustling heart of Vacaville, the Pioneer High School cross country team has put their best foot forward as they wrap up the first half of their racing schedule. Under the guidance of Coach Robin Olson, the team has been gearing up for a competitive season, and the recent meets have shown the results of their hard work and dedication.

Lagoon Valley Classic Invitational: A Modest Success

At the Lagoon Valley Classic Invitational, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement as runners took to the course. Coach Olson described the event as modestly successful for the athletes. A standout performance came from Angel Maravilla, who debuted in the 3-mile race with an impressive time of 20:03, making him the fastest runner on the varsity boys’ team. Silas Crouch, one of the team captains, wasn’t far behind, finishing with a personal best of 20:06.

Adding to the excitement, Valentino Lopez, a wrestler trying his hand at cross country for the first time, finished with a commendable time of 20:42. For the girls, senior captain Camila Perez shined brightly, securing 20th place overall with a time of 21:49, which earned her a well-deserved medal. Sophomore Teresh Neupane also left a mark by finishing 39th in the 2-mile race, clocking in at 13:40, and she too received a medal!

Coach Olson praised the athletes, particularly for tackling the notoriously steep hill nicknamed “Big Mama”, which certainly tested their stamina and resolve.

Ed Sias Invitational: Strong Competition Awaits

The cross country squad didn’t slow down as they moved on to the Ed Sias Invitational held in Martinez. The weather was spot on, and although the 2-mile course was relatively unfamiliar territory, the athletes put on a show. Ian Rios gave a stellar performance, finishing at 12:34, while Jenisha Adhikari worked hard to clock a time of 15:58.

On the girls’ side, Camila Perez recorded 14:32, following closely behind junior teammate Jillian Tang, who finished at 15:04. The dynamic duo of Angel Maravilla and Silas Crouch were once again neck and neck, completing the race with times of 12:42 and 12:44, respectively. Valentino Lopez rounded off the boys’ strong showing with a finish time of 13:05, just a heartbeat away from the leaders.

Coach Olson noted the toughness of the Ed Sias course with its rocky terrain and challenging hill, which only adds to the athletes’ resilience.

Frogtown Invitational: An Early Start for Success

As part of their preparation for the upcoming subsections course in November, the team also participated in the Frogtown Invitational. It was an early rise for the runners, who had to be up before 5:00 AM to make it on time. But the hard work paid off as Jenisha Adhikari surprised everyone by medaling in 13th place with a time of 16:09. Teresh Neupane also excelled, achieving a personal best of 13:11 and finishing 20th.

Ian Rios further impressed with his fastest 2-mile time of the season at 12:25, securing a specialty medal for his 10th place finish. Silas Crouch emerged victorious for the varsity boys with a time of 19:47 in the 3-mile, while Maravilla, despite dealing with a mild ankle injury, completed the race in 20:54.

On the girls’ side, Molly Terry continued to show her importance as she finished first on the varsity girls’ team at 23:30. Coach Olson was thrilled with how the athletes consistently passed their competitors, proving that their effort and determination are paying off.

As the Pioneer High School cross country team looks ahead, the hills may be tough, but the thrill of racing down the other side keeps them motivated. The athletes have shown promising results, and there’s no doubt their hard work will continue to shine in the meets to come.
