Lee High School Golf Team Clinches Third Straight Region 2D Championship!

The beautiful city of Jonesville is buzzing with excitement following the incredible achievement of the Lee High School golf team, who have once again showcased their skills by clinching the Region 2D tournament championship for the third consecutive year! The Generals scored an impressive 286 at the stunning Cedar Hill Country Club last Tuesday, leaving spectators cheering and celebrating this fantastic accomplishment.

Team Effort Pays Off!

Coach Barry Audia has every reason to be proud of his talented team. His praise for their performance couldn’t be clearer as he emphasized the dedication and talent that each player brings to the table. Under his guidance, the team has demonstrated determination and teamwork, proving that they know how to get the job done when it counts the most.

The standout lineup for Lee High included seasoned seniors Brycen Coomer, Walker Baker, and Cameron Mosley, who all played exceptionally well. Brycen and Walker both shot rounds of 71 on their home course, showcasing their skills and consistency. Not to be outshone, senior athletes Konner Early and Braylen Pendergraft also contributed with stellar rounds of 71 and 73 respectively, helping to elevate the team’s overall performance.

A Journey of Triumph

It’s been a remarkable journey for Lee High School. Just four years ago, they finished fifth in the VHSL Class 2 state tournament, but the tide has certainly turned since then. With each passing year, the Generals have grown stronger, winning the championship the following year and securing a third-place finish in 2024 at Great Oaks Country Club. Now, they’ve qualified for the state tournament for four straight years—a noteworthy feat, especially after a 33-year gap since their last qualification in 1990. The team’s evolution into a powerhouse has been nothing short of inspiring!

Community Spirit Shines Bright!

The atmosphere during the tournament was electric, fueled by a large crowd of enthusiastic volunteers, parents, and fans from Lee County who cheered the team on. Their support provided the players with an extra boost of motivation, proving that community spirit can make all the difference in competitive sports.

Graham Battles for a Spot

While Lee High claimed the championship, Graham wasn’t far behind, finishing second with a score of 295, securing the other state qualification spot. Last year, Graham placed second in Class 2 behind Floyd County and returned with a strong lineup featuring five of the top six players. Bailey Goodson from Graham earned the esteemed medalist title with an impressive score of 68, showcasing remarkable skills even amidst challenging weather conditions.

Individual Highlights!

Other talented individuals also shone bright during the tournament. Gate City’s Carter Wolfe finished second individually with a score of 69, marking his third journey to the state tournament. Marion junior Brady White earned his state spot with a strong score of 70. The excitement didn’t stop there as Christina Zochowski from John Battle claimed the final state tournament berth after an intense playoff round where she fought hard to sink crucial putts, edging out Campbell Sayers.

Looking Ahead to the State Tournament

The Class 2 state tournament is set for Tuesday, October 14, at Hobbs Hole Golf Course in Tappahannock, which is quite a trek at 354 miles from Jonesville. However, Coach Audia has already made arrangements to fly the team, ensuring that they have the support they’ve grown accustomed to despite the distance.

Recognizing Excellence!

This season has undoubtedly been a celebration of talent, teamwork, and resilience. Along with the championship, Coach Audia received the Coach of the Year award, and Bailey Goodson was honored as the Player of the Year. Their contributions have not only enriched their team but have inspired many in the community.

As Lee High School prepares for the state match, all eyes will be on these talented athletes, who have already made their mark and continue to strive for greatness on the golf course!
