Coronado Islanders Girls Tennis Team Kicks Off Season with a Bang!
Coronado, get ready to cheer, because the Coronado Islanders Girls Tennis Team is off to an amazing start this season! The team is proudly standing tall with a stunning 4-0 record after a dominant performance against Clairemont High School. Can you say “victory”? On September 23, 2025, the Islanders faced off against Clairemont, a match that brought back memories of a thrilling rivalry from last season’s playoffs. And guess what? The Islanders clinched the match with a resounding 15-3 victory.
A Sweet, Sweet Revenge
Last season was a nail-biter when Coronado was narrowly edged out by Clairemont in the playoffs, with both teams ending the day at 9-9; however, Coronado lost due to total games won. So, this victory had a taste of sweet revenge for the team and its loyal fans. The energy on the court was palpable as the Islanders showcased their remarkable skills and teamwork.
Fresh Talent Steals the Show
Freshman Paula Avila was nothing short of spectacular, washing away the competition by winning all three of her singles matches against Clairemont’s top three players! Talk about a debut! But she wasn’t the only standout. Fellow freshman Zoe Rice also claimed victory against Clairemont’s number one singles player, proving that this team is packed with talent.
Moreover, Lilah Cade, who transitioned to singles, powered through and snatched victories in her matches against Clairemont’s No. 2 and No. 3 players. With these outstanding individual performances, the Islanders really set themselves apart!
Dazzling Doubles
When it came to doubles, the magic continued. The fierce duo of Maria Anaya and Grace Elardo kept their undefeated streak alive, with an unbeatable record of 11-0 this season. They went a perfect 3-0 against Clairemont, showing their chemistry and skill on the court. Not to be outdone, Sam Aldworth and Brynn Belong also triumphed with a solid 3-0 victory on the day.
To round off this incredible match, Whitney Pate and Abbie McKissick struck again, contributing two important wins against Clairemont’s No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams. Just like that, the Islanders showed up and delivered a match filled with intense action and excitement!
Looking Ahead
With a robust 4-0 record, the Islanders are riding high into their upcoming league matches against some tough opponents. Set your calendars for September 16 against Mission Bay High School, followed by a clash with University City High School on September 18. Last season, Mission Bay entered the CIF DII playoffs as the No. 12 seed, while University City finished as runners-up in CIF DIII. It looks like the Islanders have their work cut out for them!
Additionally, this year’s competition in the Eastern League promises to be fierce, featuring teams like Canyon Hills and Christian High School, both possessing valuable playoff experiences from last season. But with the momentum they’ve built up, the Islanders are ready to face whatever challenges come their way! This impressive start sets a positive tone as they move forward into the heart of their league schedule. Stay tuned, Coronado! The best is yet to come!
