Exciting Changes for Big Rapids High School Baseball!
Big Rapids has some exciting news as the Big Rapids School District has announced the new varsity baseball coach for the upcoming season. Meet Alec T. Gary, who has taken on the role after coaching legend JT Scarpelli wrapped up a successful three years at the helm. With his background and passion for the sport, it looks like the program is in good hands!
A New Chapter for Alec Gary
Alec Gary is more than just a baseball coach; he’s also a licensed funeral director and manager at Daggett Gilbert Funeral Homes, right here in Big Rapids. He made the decision to relocate to the area just last year after previously commuting over an hour to follow his coaching dreams. This change allows him to immerse himself in the community and strengthen his relationship with the athletes he’ll be mentoring.
Vision for the Future
Gary’s mission is clear: he wants to develop young athletes both on and off the baseball field. He emphasizes the importance of building strong communication and relationships within the team. With the baseball season fast approaching, Gary plans to take full advantage of the off-season. He aims to provide players with access to the baseball facilities, keeping them active and engaged while also encouraging them to participate in other sports and activities.
Building on a Legacy
Big Rapids baseball has a rich history, and Alec Gary is eager to build upon the strong legacy left behind by Coach Scarpelli. During Scarpelli’s leadership, the team clinched Central State Activities Association titles, and Gary understands the weight of this heritage. He recognizes Big Rapids’ tradition of competitiveness and high-quality coaching, and he’s excited to add his experience to the mix.
Experience in Coaching
Growing up in Gladwin, Gary was no stranger to baseball. He was the team captain of the Gladwin High School baseball team and played primarily as a catcher for the Gladwin American Legion Post 171 team. In addition to baseball, he was also a hockey player during his high school years. His journey in coaching began at Gladwin where he served as an assistant for eight years, working by the side of his father, who was the head coach. After his father retired, Gary took charge and was head coach for two seasons. His commitment to the sport didn’t stop there; he also made a mark with the Gladwin American Legion A Baseball team.
Strong Support from the Athletic Department
Stephanie Shaw, the athletic director at Big Rapids High School, is supportive of Gary’s appointment. She believes his deep understanding of player development and his enthusiasm will yield a positive impact on the student-athletes. With Gary at the helm, the future looks bright for the program as he integrates his techniques and approaches to nurture the talent in his players.
The Road Ahead
As the baseball season nears, Alec Gary is more ready than ever to make his mark. He aims to foster talent by encouraging strong commitments, not only in baseball but in other sports as well.
