In South Bend, Indiana, the NCAA is currently looking into potential violations of sports betting rules that involve former players from six different college basketball programs. This investigation centers around 13 players from schools including Eastern Michigan, Temple, Arizona State, New Orleans, North Carolina A&T, and Mississippi Valley State.

It is important to note that these schools are not under investigation themselves and will not face any penalties. The concerns came to light through the NCAA’s integrity monitoring program, which observed unusual betting activities and communication patterns, specifically citing text messages and social media interactions among the players.

Allegations against these athletes include betting on their own teams, sharing inside information with others for betting purposes, and even attempting to manipulate game outcomes and performances. As part of the investigation, some players have reportedly refused to participate.

Arizona State University has acknowledged the ongoing investigation regarding a former player, who is no longer enrolled there, and confirmed their cooperation throughout the process. They emphasized that the university itself is not implicated in any wrongdoing.

In a related issue, the NCAA Committee on Infractions has resolved three similar cases where former players from Fresno State and San Jose State were found to have violated betting rules. These athletes faced severe consequences, including the permanent revocation of their eligibility for knowingly participating in the manipulation of game outcomes.

The NCAA President, Charlie Baker, remarked on the growing concern regarding sports betting, acknowledging that the rise of legalized betting does come with increased risks to the integrity of competition. Baker emphasized the necessity for both regulators and gaming companies to implement stronger measures to maintain the integrity of the sport.

As the investigation unfolds, the NCAA remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of college athletics and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
