Mizzou Women’s Golf Shines at Sam Golden Invitational
Columbia, MO – The Mizzou women’s golf team kicked off their season at the Sam Golden Invitational on Monday, making quite an impression. After the first day of competition, the Tigers found themselves in first place, thanks in large part to the remarkable performance of freshman Ebba Liljeberg. In only her second round as a collegiate golfer, Liljeberg set an NCAA record by scoring an unbelievable 11-under 61.
This incredible second-round performance not only ties the all-time collegiate record in relation to par, but it also featured 18 birdies across the first 36 holes, allowing her to lead the entire field of 72 players by a staggering nine shots going into the final round. Previously, Liljeberg established a program freshman record with a first-round score of 66. However, she quickly surpassed that record with her second round, which included a fantastic 11-birdie showing, breaking Mizzou’s single-round record by four strokes.
Starting her day strong, Liljeberg made a birdie on the first hole and never looked back. She opened the second half of her game with six consecutive birdies, further solidifying her dominance. The other teams in the tournament had a tough time keeping up, as Mizzou collectively finished the day at an impressive 24-under, with scores of 281 in the first round and 271 in the second round.
Senior players Addie Dobson and Melanie Walker also contributed significantly to the team’s success. Dobson finished 12th individually after a solid four-under 68 in the second round, while Walker ended the day in 22nd place with a three-under 69 in her opening round.
As the Tigers head into the final round, they maintain a six-shot lead, setting themselves up for a strong finish. The final round is set to begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CT on Tuesday.
