Salida High School Boys’ Golf Team Hits the Greens with Grit
Salida, a town bustling with energy, recently showcased its young talents on the green as the Salida High School boys’ golf team headed out to compete in dual tournaments on August 21. The excitement was palpable as the team split into two groups, one taking on the challenge at the scenic Sand Creek course in Colorado Springs, and the other teeing off at the Pueblo South venue.
Competition and Challenges
At Pueblo South, the team managed to place 9th, with a solid score of 264 strokes, tying with the host team. That’s not too shabby at all! Meanwhile, over at Sand Creek, things were a bit tougher. The team came in at 22nd place with a score of 319. The Sand Creek course had its share of challenges, especially with the muddy conditions caused by recent rain, making every swing count. The competition was fierce, too, with larger schools fielding their talented golfers.
Standout Performers
Among the standouts this past weekend was senior golfer Logan Rosales, who emerged as the team’s low scorer at Sand Creek, finishing in 72nd place with a score of 102. Just behind him, junior John Fast came in with a score of 108, placing 81st. He’s currently the team’s No. 3 golfer, showing promising skills as the season progresses.
Also taking the greens for his very first varsity tournament was freshman Chris Arbour, who managed to score 114, placing him 91st. Fellow junior Lev Wolkenbreit wasn’t far behind, taking 85th with a score of 109. Despite being newcomers, these young athletes exhibited a commendable spirit and determination.
Pueblo South Achievements
Meanwhile, assistant coach Marc Martellaro led another group to Pueblo South, where senior Henry Sisneros shone bright with an impressive score of 78, finishing 3rd overall! He hit his target of staying in the 70s, making it one of the highlights of the day. Fresh talent Tao Adams, a junior competing for the first time, delivered an incredible performance with an impressive even par (E) score. This caught the eye of Martellaro, who was thrilled with the result.
Senior golfer Alex Messa accomplished his goal as well, finishing with a score of 99 and taking 49th place. Junior Ryus Mattix hit personal bests in both chipping and putting with a score of 87, finishing 19th overall!
Next Up for the Team
The excitement doesn’t stop here! The team will head back out to the greens for their next competition at Buena Vista on August 28. The roster features a mix of seasoned seniors and a handful of enthusiastic freshmen eager to improve their game.
The players have set personal goals ranging from staying consistent in the 70s to enhancing their short-game techniques and breaking their individual scoring records. This season is about development, and many team members are focused on building their mental strength and bouncing back from rough shots.
A Supportive Team Spirit
In a supportive environment, senior Caden Sharpe and his teammates are reveling in the joy of teaching the younger players and fostering a sense of camaraderie within a large team. With no regional tournament in sight, performance will be evaluated based on average scores, underscoring the importance of consistency!
As the Salida High School boys’ golf team prepares for their next outing, the air is filled with hope and excitement. With a blend of teamwork and individual determination, these young athletes are on their way to improve, compete, and perhaps, conquer the courses that lie ahead!
