Texas Panhandle Cross Country Season Kicks Off with Promising Talents for 2025

Welcome to Amarillo, where the excitement is building for a brand-new season of high school cross country! These talented young athletes are lacing up their running shoes and hitting the trails as practices officially began in early August. As August rolls on, the teams are gearing up for some thrilling meets that promise to showcase the hard work and dedication of our local runners.

Kickoff of Competition

The competition is set to get underway later this month, and it promises to be quite a spectacle. For our high school teams, there’s no shortage of action as they will be participating in district meets come October. Following that, teams will also compete in regional meets, wrapping up this challenging yet exhilarating journey with the state competition at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock on October 31 and November 1.

Reigning Champions and Rising Stars

Just last year, the Canyon High School boys and girls cross country teams made waves by clinching state titles, and the excitement doesn’t stop there! The Lady Eagles, mostly comprised of the championship squad from 2024, look to defend their title and prove they are the team to beat. Meanwhile, the Randall High School girls team, which finished as the state runner-ups in Class 4A last year, will be returning two notable medalists who are itching to make their mark again.

Even though Canyon’s boys team has said goodbye to their top two runners from last season, they’ve still got some key athletes who are ready to step up. The Amarillo area has a long-standing reputation for nurturing talented distance runners, and this year is no different!

Course Distances and Expectations

As the season heats up, it’s interesting to note that the UIL Class 1A-4A girls cross country courses are set at a distance of 2 miles, while Class 5A-6A courses stretch to 5,000 meters. All boys classifications will be running the same 5,000-meter race. With such a variety of distances, it adds a new dimension to the competition and challenges each athlete uniquely.

Spotlight on Returning Runners

The competition this year is looking fierce with a variety of standout runners returning from last year’s state meets. On the boys’ side, we have Carter Esteban from Boys Ranch, who placed 42nd at state, and Gustavo Quintana from Gruver, who took 51st. On the girls’ side, keep your eyes on Addyson Bristow from Canyon, the Class 4A state champion who has already shown exceptional speed with a time of 10:43.3!

Other notable returning runners include Hope McLain from Kress, who finished 12th at state, and Alexis Wade from Farwell, who brought home a 3rd place finish at state with an impressive time of 11:56.6. Each runner brings their own set of skills and grit, and with every meet, the thrill of competition builds.

Final Thoughts

As we gear up for another exciting cross country season, we can’t help but feel the energy buzzing through Amarillo. With teams filled with both seasoned returnees and promising newcomers, the 2025 cross country season is bound to be memorable! Whether you’re a parent, a coach, or simply a fan of high school sports, make sure to mark your calendars for all the upcoming meets.
