New York City is reeling after a tragic shooting that occurred on Monday evening at a Midtown office building, which houses NFL offices among other businesses. The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, reportedly aimed his attack at the NFL due to feelings linked to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain condition often associated with contact sports. Mayor Eric Adams announced the grim details during a press conference, revealing that a three-page note found in Tamura’s wallet hinted at his desire for his brain to be studied for CTE.
Details from the investigation show that Tamura drove cross-country to New York City in the days leading up to the shooting. After arriving, he took a wrong elevator and ended up in the Rudin Management area of the building instead of the NFL offices. It was there that he opened fire, tragically taking the lives of four individuals, including a New York Police Department Officer Didarul Islam, while critically injuring another person.
In response to the incident, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell informed employees via a company-wide message that the building remains an active crime scene and urged staff to work from home. Many employees will have access to grief counselors as the NFL increases security measures at its offices. “We are deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers who responded to this threat quickly and decisively,” Goodell wrote.
Mayor Adams expressed his frustration over the gunman’s ability to obtain a concealed carry permit despite having a known history of mental health issues. Investigators discovered prescription medications and weapons, including a rifle, in Tamura’s vehicle. Reports indicated that he had previously encountered police due to erratic behavior, raising questions about the adequacy of mental health screening processes in gun purchases.
