Penn State Women’s Lacrosse Welcomes Brooke Matthews for Fourth Season
University Park, PA – Brooke Matthews is gearing up for her fourth season as an assistant coach with the Penn State Nittany Lions women’s lacrosse team in 2016. Under her guidance, the Nittany Lions have established a strong presence in collegiate lacrosse, making their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, including impressive runs to the quarterfinals in three of those seasons.
Last season proved to be a remarkable achievement for Matthews and the team as they clinched the Big Ten Tournament title. This victory highlights her valuable contribution to the program, showcasing her ability to foster talent and create a winning environment.
Before her time at Penn State, Matthews honed her coaching skills as an assistant coach at Mount St. Mary’s, where she worked with former Nittany Lion player BJ Johnson. Her tenure there in 2012 was marked by significant success, leading the team to eight wins and a spot in the Northeast Conference championship game.
Matthews has a distinguished playing background herself. As a four-year starting midfielder for Northwestern from 2008 to 2011, she celebrated three national championships and four American Lacrosse Conference titles. Matthews finished her collegiate career with an impressive 106 points, gathering a total of 88 goals and 18 assists. Notably, she produced a career-high of 32 points in her senior season.
Off the field, Matthews is equally accomplished academically. She earned a degree in communication studies and was recognized on the ALC Academic Honor Roll multiple times, along with receiving the Big Ten Distinguished Honors Scholar Award twice.
Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Matthews also has experience coaching through the Wildcat Elite Club, TLC Lacrosse, and at the Amonte Sports Lacrosse Camps. Her diverse experience, both as a player and a coach, has positioned her well to help guide the Nittany Lions in their ongoing pursuit for excellence in women’s lacrosse.
