Elizabethtown Welcomes Two Local Basketball Legends into Hall of Fame
Exciting news is bouncing around Elizabethtown as the countdown begins for the 2025 Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony! Mark your calendars for September 6, 2025, because this year’s ceremony is set to celebrate some of the greatest talents and influences in the game.
Celebrating Outstanding Achievements
This year is especially thrilling for fans of local basketball as Greg Buckner and Anthony Hickey Jr. will be honored among the distinguished inductees. Both of these players have left an unforgettable mark on the Kentucky basketball scene and it is wonderful to see their hard work and dedication recognized at this prestigious level.
From University Heights to the NBA
Let’s start by shining the spotlight on Greg Buckner. This former star from University Heights Academy took the basketball world by storm, especially back in 1992 when he led his team to victory in the Sweet 16 state championship. Not only that, but he also helped clinch the All “A” state title in 1991. During his final year of high school, Buckner was nothing short of phenomenal, averaging an impressive 22 points, nine rebounds, and four assists per game. This performance earned him the well-deserved title of First Team All-State.
After high school, Buckner initially committed to Providence, but he quickly changed course to follow his coach, Rick Barnes, to Clemson University. At Clemson, he continued to shine, leading the Tigers in scoring for all four years. His basketball journey didn’t stop there, as Buckner went on to enjoy a successful 10-year career in the NBA! Currently, he’s giving back to the sport as an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks, helping the next generation of players.
From Christian County’s Courts to Italy
Now onto Anthony Hickey Jr., another remarkable talent in this year’s Hall of Fame class. Hickey led his team at Christian County High School to an exciting Sweet 16 state title in 2011, and his skills earned him the title of Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball that same year. After graduation, Hickey took his talents to LSU, where he played three seasons before eventually transferring to Oklahoma State. Today, he’s pursuing a professional career in Italy, continuing his journey in the world of basketball.
A Coach Who Made It All Happen
And we can’t forget to mention the incredible contributions of coach Don Parson. After coaching at Calhoun High School, he moved to Madisonville in 1967, where he dedicated over three decades to coaching. Parson boasts an impressive record of 706 wins, including seven regional titles! That puts him 11th on the all-time list of winningest coaches in Kentucky. His efforts in developing young talent have left an indelible impact on the sport.
More Honorees Joining the Family
In addition to Buckner, Hickey, and Parson, the 2025 Hall of Fame class includes a remarkable group of players and coaches such as Hardin McLane (Elizabethtown Catholic), Natalie Powers Payne (Apollo), John “Hop” Brown (West Carter), Julius Berry (Dunbar), Brett Burrow (North Hardin), Phil “Cookie” Grawemeyer (Dupont Manual), Kim Mays Mills (Knox Central), Jason Osborne (Male), and Adrian “Odie” Smith (Farmington).
