In Indianapolis, the ongoing saga surrounding the University of Michigan’s alleged sign-stealing scheme seems to be heating up. Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti has taken a strong stance, asserting that no further punishment is warranted against Michigan following the NCAA’s investigation. This argument stems from a letter he recently sent to the NCAA Committee on Infractions (COI), as reported by sources close to the situation.
The NCAA has charged Michigan with a total of 11 rule violations, of which six are classified as Level 1 violations. However, Petitti emphasizes that the Big Ten has already issued significant disciplinary actions, including suspending former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh for the final three games of the 2023 regular season.
Despite this suspension, Harbaugh was permitted to engage in team practices and related activities. Remarkably, under his leadership, the Wolverines clinched the Big Ten title and subsequently secured the College Football Playoff National Championship. This scenario has fueled complexities in Michigan’s legal stance, especially as the university argued against the NCAA’s claims, terming them as “grossly overreaching” and “wildly overcharging,” citing insufficient evidence to support the accusations.
According to Michigan’s defense, only one out of 52 games involving teams scouted by former staffer Connor Stalions was attended personally by him. This has raised questions on the validity of the NCAA’s allegations.
Furthermore, Michigan’s coach Sherrone Moore also faced a two-game suspension during the 2025 season, with the possibility of further repercussions pending the NCAA’s decisions.
