In Chicago, the buzz around the Bears is growing as they prepare for the 2025 NFL season. One player who is drawing both attention and concern is rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. During his first year, Williams showed promise, yet he faced a significant issue: getting sacked too often. He was dropped to the turf a staggering 68 times last season, tying him with former QB David Carr for the third-highest sack total in NFL history.
While it’s fair to say that Williams needs to work on releasing the ball quicker, we can’t ignore the struggles of the Bears’ offensive line in 2024. The unit struggled mightily, making it hard for the rookie to have a graceful pocket to work in. In response, the Bears’ front office recognized the need for improvements by making several roster changes during the offseason. This included trades and player acquisitions through free agency and in the draft.
Despite these changes, the offensive line remains a prominent issue as the Bears look ahead to the coming season. NFL executives, coaches, and scouts have voiced their worries about the protection Williams will receive, particularly from the tackle positions. The team is projected to start Braxton Jones and Darnell Wright at tackle this fall. However, neither of these players ranked among the top ten in a recent poll of league personnel.
Without a solid Pro Bowl-caliber tackle, there is reason for concern regarding the protection Williams might have in the pocket. Although the Bears are unlikely to see their quarterback sacked nearly 70 times again next year, there’s no guarantee he will be adequately protected. If Williams finds himself under pressure again, it could lead to more struggles for the Chicago offense.
As preparations continue, all eyes will be on the effectiveness of the offensive line and how it influences Caleb Williams’ second season in the NFL.
