This lively event showcased the Telegram & Gazette Hometeam All-Stars and highlighted the remarkable achievements of young athletes from across the region. It’s part of the broader scope of the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards, which is known as the largest high school sports recognition platform in the country.
Star of the Show: Shimer Takes Top Honors
This year, the spotlight shone brightly on Shimer, who dazzled onlookers with a phenomenal high jump performance. By taking home the coveted Hometeam Athlete of the Year award, Shimer demonstrated his talent and dedication. His evidence can be found in a season where he finished in the top two in every one of his 10 in-state competitions, including securing first place at both the Division 1 state meet and the highly competitive Meet of Champions. Last year’s runner-up, he now boasts a top jump of 6 feet, 6 inches, tying as the second-best in the state. Not just an incredible athlete, he’s now bound for the University of Connecticut to further his academic and athletic career.
Rising Stars Shine Brightly
Alongside Shimer, other talented athletes also made their mark. Beardmore, another standout, achieved back-to-back T&G Super Team selections and proved his prowess in the shot put. This year, he finished second in the Division 6 state meet and sixth at the Meet of Champions, with a staggering personal record throw of 59 feet, 3 inches ranking fifth statewide.
Consigli, who medaled at the Meet of Champions for the second consecutive year, took fifth place and showcased a personal best throw of 171 feet, 3 inches at the New England championships. His consistent performance helped him to break a school record that had stood since 1983. Meanwhile, Gibbons impressed by setting a new school indoor shot put record of 55-10¾, topping a mark from 26 years ago and finishing first at the Division 1 state meet.
A Jump Ahead
Jamoko also carved out a niche, securing his second consecutive T&G Super Team selection with phenomenal performances in long and triple jump events. He dominated the Southern Worcester County League and Central Mass. Division 1 championships before medaling at the Meet of Champions. His best triple jump of 46 feet, 4¼ inches further extended his own school record and positioned him seventh in the state.
Kalvinek stood out in the team for his impressive results, winning titles in both discus and shot put at the Colonial Athletic League championships. He retained his titles at the Division 3 state meet in shot put, boasting personal records that ranked third and 11th in the state.
Incredible Performances & Records Set
Levine, another this-season hero, enjoyed his third T&G Super Team selection, medaling in every competition entered, with a personal best throw of 60 feet, 8¾ inches placing him second in the state. Among the athletes making waves, Lipka’s excellence shined through in the pentathlon, where he excelled at the Nike Outdoor Nationals.
New also reached a milestone with his third T&G Super Team selection, contributing to his team’s victory in the Division 6 state championships. Rosenburg displayed remarkable talent in the discus, setting a personal record of 168 feet that ranked ninth statewide.
Last but certainly not least, Velez made headlines by setting a school record pole vault jump of 15 feet, ¼ inch, marking the highest in the state this spring. This awards ceremony celebrated over 300 athletes, recognizing the Players of the Year in an impressive 31 sports.
As the event wrapped up, it was made even more special by guest speaker Andrew Raycroft, former goalie for the Boston Bruins, adding an inspiring touch to an already unforgettable night of athletic excellence.
