Southside Proud: Noblesville Boys Golf Team Shines in State Finals

The vibrant community of Noblesville came together to celebrate its very own boys golf team, who triumphed with a spectacular third-place finish at the IHSAA state finals held at the picturesque Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel. It was a nail-biting event on June 17-18 that kept spectators on the edge of their seats as the Millers showcased their skills on the greens.

Strong Finish on a Challenging Course

The Millers wrapped up the tournament with a team total of 600 strokes, finishing just two strokes ahead of Homestead, who came in at 602. In an exciting twist, Noblesville managed to outpace Zionsville by one stroke, as they locked down fourth place with 601 strokes. However, everyone’s eyes were glued to Westfield, who dominated the tournament, winning by an astonishing margin of 30 strokes! Talk about a one-sided showdown!

In the opening round, Noblesville put forth a score of 305 strokes but showed remarkable determination by improving their game to just 295 strokes in the final round. This impressive comeback allowed the team to strut proudly onto the podium for a well-deserved celebration.

Star Players Shine Bright

Leading the charge for the Millers was senior Drew Werkley, who ended up tying for 12th place with an impressive score of 146 after rounds of 72 and 74. Then there was senior Jackson Umthum, who followed closely behind by tying for 24th with a total score of 150, showing his resilience with rounds of 78 and 72.

Junior Tyler Marucci also made his presence felt, scoring 152 (79-73) and securing his place among the top five for the team. Other notable contributions came from junior Dustin Turpin, who recorded a total score of 155 (76-79), and senior Lance Decker, who wrapped up with 156 (80-76) and earned a spot on the Indiana High School Golf Association all-state team based on his stellar performance throughout the season.

A Bittersweet Farewell

Though it was a moment of joy for the team in Noblesville, coach Gary Deakyne felt a wave of mixed emotions as he prepared to say goodbye to these talented seniors. Werkley is headed to Marian University, Decker will take his talents to Trine University, and Umthum has a spot waiting for him at Taylor University. As they embark on their collegiate golf journeys, it’s clear they will be missed, but their potential for success shines brightly.

A Look at the Competition

Noblesville wasn’t the only team showcasing their talents. The defending state champion Zionsville finished closely behind with a total of 601 strokes. Zionsville’s sophomore sensation, Brycen Tisch, made waves by shooting an incredible five-under 67 in the first round, ultimately landing him fourth place individually with a score of 139. This young golfer’s performance has raised eyebrows and left many anticipating his future play.

Under the leadership of coach Adam Wood, the Zionsville Eagles reflected on the competition and felt proud of their overall team efforts. Alongside Tisch, the other Zionsville scores included freshman Macaulay Myers (146), junior Max Steiner (154), freshman Killian Laughlin (162), and senior Owen Brady (171).
