Parents and players are advocating for alternative solutions without eliminating the tennis program.
Gridley Unified School District Cuts Tennis Program – Community Reacts
In a move that’s shaking up local sports enthusiasts, the Gridley Unified School District has officially announced the discontinuation of its Gridley High School girls’ and boys’ tennis teams starting next school year. This decision, made during the school board meeting on May 28, has left many tennis players, their families, and community members hoping for a last-minute change of heart.
Budget Woes Spark Sports Cuts
During the meeting, Principal Rikki-Lee Burresch highlighted the ongoing challenge of rising costs associated with athletic programs as the driving force behind this tough decision. With new interests from students in starting girls’ flag football and boys’ volleyball teams, something had to give. The budget simply cannot stretch any further to accommodate all the sporting desires at the school.
To give an idea of the financial strain, the cost for reconditioning the football helmets alone came in at an eye-popping $19,000. Furthermore, administrative fees are projected to climb to around $30,000 next year. As if that’s not enough, the sports program also has to consider hiring an athletic trainer, a requirement by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).
The State of Tennis at Gridley
Interestingly, tennis matches at Gridley High do not come with the extra expense of officiating, making it a less costly sport in comparison to others. However, that doesn’t mean it’s immune to cuts. The school also faces maintenance challenges with its tennis courts, which are a staggering 75 years old. Resurfacing those courts would set the district back approximately $38,000, adding yet another burden to an already stretched budget.
