Denver, CO – Deion Sanders, head coach of the University of Colorado Buffaloes and father of quarterback Shedeur Sanders, is pushing back against negative reports about his son’s performance in pre-draft meetings with NFL teams. As the draft approaches, there were claims that Shedeur was unprepared, described as “entitled,” and even that his meeting was the “worst” that some executives had seen. These allegations appear to have contributed to Shedeur falling from a projected top-three selection to being chosen in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns.
During an appearance on Asante Samuel’s podcast, Coach Sanders expressed his frustration with these claims. He believes the rumors stemmed from fear surrounding his own potential move to the NFL. “They want to create these narratives and create these stories and then attach them to a kid that ain’t never did nothing wrong,” he stated. Coach Sanders emphasized that Shedeur excels under pressure, pointing out that his son has successfully adapted to multiple offensive coordinators throughout his college career.
“To say he went into a meeting unprepared is just ridiculous,” Sanders argued. He further defended Shedeur, insisting that anyone who knows him understands he is a professional capable of navigating interviews without issues. “He’s not going to show up to a meeting with headphones on,” Sanders said, calling for the public to recognize his son’s capabilities. “It did hurt,” he added, referring to the impact of the rumors. However, he also pointed out that challenging situations can lead to personal growth.
In the weeks leading up to the draft, Coach Sanders has repeatedly called out what he refers to as “false rumors,” urging all parties to stop spreading misinformation. He believes that such negativity can serve as motivation for players like Shedeur, who look to prove critics wrong.
Ultimately, Shedeur was selected by the Browns, joining a quarterback room that includes veterans Deshaun Watson and Joe Flacco, as well as fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. This marks an important step in his professional career as he transitions to the NFL.
