Utah’s Young Football Stars Shine in Recent Rankings
In a demonstration of the impressive football talent emerging from Utah, two players from the Beehive State have been recognized among the top young stars in the NFL. This year, Detroit Lions tackle Penei Sewell tops the list, securing the No. 1 spot of the top 25 players under 25. Meanwhile, Puka Nacua, a wide receiver for the Los Angeles Rams, follows closely behind at No. 2.
This marks the second consecutive year that Sewell has claimed the top position in these rankings. The former standout from Deseret Hills High in St. George was drafted in the first round after an impressive college career at Oregon. Over the past two seasons, Sewell has solidified his reputation in the league by earning First Team All-Pro honors twice while being graded as the No. 3 overall offensive tackle for 2024.
Sewell’s ability on the field is especially highlighted by his skills in run-blocking, boasting a career grade of 95.2, which is the second-best mark among offensive linemen since he joined the league in 2021. Since 2022, he has only allowed four sacks, playing a crucial role in Detroit’s formidable offensive line.
Nacua, a product of BYU and Orem High, made a significant impact in the NFL, breaking several records during his rookie season in 2023. In just two seasons, he has racked up 184 receptions for 2,476 yards and nine touchdowns. His receiving stats are impressive, as he has achieved a receiving grade of 92.4, leading all qualifying players in this category.
Despite facing injuries in 2024, Nacua continued to shine, leading the league in both PFF receiving grade and yards per route run, showcasing his prowess as one of the most efficient receivers of the year.
Alongside Sewell and Nacua, the list of top young players also features Jayden Daniels from the Washington Commanders, Kyle Hamilton of the Baltimore Ravens, and Bijan Robinson from the Atlanta Falcons. These rankings underscore the bright future ahead for the NFL as it continues to showcase remarkable young talents from different backgrounds.
