A Deeply Concerning Incident
However, not all news from the track is about achievements and victories. Recently, a serious incident occurred involving Nate Bentley, a freshman from Creston Community High School, who collapsed during a track meet after finishing his relay leg. Thankfully, the quick action of coaches and trainers, along with the use of an AED, played a crucial role in reviving him. Currently, he is responsive and recovering in the hospital, but the incident highlights the critical need for safety measures in schools.
In light of this, there is a growing legislative effort in Iowa aimed at establishing mandatory Cardiac Emergency Response Plans in schools to better prepare for emergencies like this one. Families and classmates are rallying around Bentley, and those wishing to contribute to his recovery can send donations via Venmo to his mother, Erin Wallace.
As we gear up for the state qualifying meets, the thrills and spills of track season have never been more exciting! Let’s cheer on our local athletes and hope for a safe and successful competition, making this a track and field season to remember.
