Exciting Times Ahead for Lincoln-Way East as Luke Yaklich Takes the Helm
Frankfort, Illinois – Buckle up, basketball fans! There’s a buzz in the air at Lincoln-Way East High School as they welcome Luke Yaklich as the new head boys’ varsity basketball coach. After spending 11 years coaching at the college level, he’s diving back into high school basketball and bringing a world of experience along with him.
From Courts to Classrooms
Alongside his coaching duties, Yaklich will also be teaching social science, giving him the perfect opportunity to connect with students both on and off the court. It’s a full-circle moment for Yaklich, who starts his new adventure just days before his 49th birthday. Talk about a fantastic birthday gift!
A Stellar Coaching Journey
Yaklich’s coaching career kicked off way back in 1999 at LaSalle-Peru High School. He then spent six successful seasons at Joliet West, racking up an impressive record of 104-62. His solid performance at the high school level opened doors to collegiate success, where he went on to become an assistant coach at Illinois State before joining Michigan.
During his tenure at Michigan, Yaklich became known for his defensive prowess. He was instrumental in turning the Wolverines’ defense around, elevating them from 69th to 3rd in defensive efficiency in just his first year. Under his guidance, Michigan had a record of 33-8, and even made it to the NCAA championship game in 2018, although they were defeated by Villanova. The following year saw even more success, with the defense ranking 2nd in the nation and leading the team to the Sweet 16.
New Beginnings
After moving to Texas for a brief stint, Yaklich eventually took the reins at the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC). Despite working hard, he finished his time at UIC with a record of 47-70, a journey that ultimately led to his departure in March 2024. Following a year away from coaching, he’s made the decision to return to the high school scene, which he seems genuinely excited about. Yaklich refers to himself as a high school coach who had the opportunity to coach at the collegiate level—now he’s bringing that experience back where it all started.
A Legacy in the Making
Replacing Rich Kolimas, the only coach in Lincoln-Way East’s history, will certainly be a task, but Yaklich appears ready for the challenge. Kolimas retired after a remarkable 24 seasons in which he compiled a record of 341-316. With the legacy of success that Kolimas built, Yaklich is keen on continuing to grow the program while instilling fundamentals and focusing on player development.
Community Commitment
Yaklich has taken notice of the local community, which prides itself on the dual pursuits of education and athletics. His vision for Lincoln-Way East basketball centers around developing not just skilled, disciplined players, but well-rounded individuals prepared for the rigors of high school and collegiate basketball.
As the first day of practice approaches, there’s little doubt that the Lincoln-Way East community is buzzing with enthusiasm. With Yaklich at the helm, fans can expect a new era of Bears’ basketball that centers around strong fundamentals, community involvement, and the continuous pursuit of excellence.
It’s exciting times ahead for Lincoln-Way East, and for anyone who loves high school basketball, there’s plenty to look forward to. With Luke Yaklich returning to the sidelines, it’s safe to say that the Bears are in for a bright future that celebrates both the sport and the spirit of teamwork. Let the games begin!
