Pittsburgh Steelers Look to Fill Quarterback Spot Before Training Camp
The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for training camp, set to begin in just over two months, and one key position they’re looking to fill is the quarterback spot. With the team’s current roster, it seems likely they will sign another quarterback soon. The buzz around the league suggests that four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers could potentially join the Steelers.
Recently, Rodgers mentioned that he is “open to everything” as he considers his future in football. This statement, while intriguing, might not be what the Steelers were hoping to hear. The team’s president, Art Rooney II, indicated during the draft that he expects a decision from Rodgers “soon,” which would allow him to participate in the team’s offseason workouts if he decides to come to Pittsburgh for the 2025 season.
However, the Steelers have a backup plan in case Rodgers does not sign. Currently, they have Mason Rudolph, a 2018 third-round pick who re-signed with the team after a stint with the Titans. Other quarterbacks on the roster include rookie draft pick Will Howard and Skylar Thompson, a former seventh-round pick who has started four NFL games. If Rodgers doesn’t end up with the Steelers, Rudolph is likely to take the lead role.
The organization is also eyeing a few other veteran options just in case. Among the available quarterbacks, names like Brett Rypien, Teddy Bridgewater, Desmond Ridder, Carson Wentz, and Tyler Huntley have surfaced. Rypien, relatively young at 29, showed promise last preseason and might be a solid fit. Bridgewater, though recently retired from playing, has significant experience and could offer valuable leadership.
Ridder knows the Steelers’ offensive system well due to his past with their current offensive coordinator, and Wentz has the potential to step into a backup role with his experience. Huntley, known for his mobility and ability to make big plays, could be a viable option but needs to work on his turnover issues.
As the Steelers look to solidify their squad ahead of the new season, many will be keeping an eye on which quarterback they ultimately secure in order to strengthen their roster.
