In a recent update from Atlanta, the NFL is reflecting positively on the performance of the dynamic kickoff introduced in 2024. Following its first season, officials are considering possible adjustments for 2025 to further enhance excitement and safety during kickoffs.
Rich McKay, the chairman of the NFL Competition Committee and CEO of the Atlanta Falcons, addressed reporters on Sunday about plans for the upcoming year. McKay highlighted that one of the main focuses is to increase the number of returns. Currently, the league starts kickoffs from the 30-yard line, but there is talk of moving that back to the 35-yard line. Additionally, kicking teams could begin their kicks from five yards further back than before.
The initial changes saw a notable impact, with a significant 57 percent increase in kickoff returns and a drop in injury rates, two outcomes the league is pleased with. However, the modification also led to the elimination of the surprise onside kick option. When teams attempted onside kicks in 2024, success rates were low, prompting further discussion on how to enhance this strategy. McKay mentioned that the committee plans to consult with special teams coaches to develop possible tweaks to improve the chances of a kicking team recovering the ball during an onside attempt.
Any proposed changes must be approved by at least 24 teams. McKay is optimistic that discussions will lead to actionable proposals ready for the league meetings scheduled for March.
