New York Jets Community Mourns the Loss of Nick Mangold
New York City – The New York Jets family is in mourning following the passing of former center Nick Mangold, who died on Saturday night at the age of 41 due to complications from kidney disease. Mangold, recognized as one of the all-time greats in Jets history, was known for his toughness and leadership on and off the field.
Jets Chairman Woody Johnson expressed deep sorrow, stating, “Nick was more than a legendary center. He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate.” He also highlighted Mangold’s warmth and loyalty, which made him an essential part of the Jets family.
Recently, Mangold shared his struggles with kidney disease in an emotional letter, detailing his diagnosis of a genetic defect that led to chronic kidney problems. He expressed gratitude for his supportive family and community while revealing he was undergoing dialysis and seeking a kidney transplant.
His legacy includes being an anchor for the Jets’ offensive line from his debut in 2006 until his retirement in 2016. Over a decade, he played a crucial role in guiding the team to three playoff appearances and two AFC Championship Games. He started 171 games and earned multiple accolades, including seven Pro Bowl selections.
Former teammate D’Brickashaw Ferguson remembered the significant moments they shared, saying, “A big part of our lives were spent on that field. It’s a hard time.” Another former teammate, Bart Scott, praised Mangold for his professionalism and ability to connect with others, calling him a true friend.
