The excitement is building as these athletes prepare to showcase their skills at Hersey High School starting on Thursday, October 23 and wrapping up with the championship matches on Saturday, October 25.
Local Talent Shines in Sectionals
Just this past weekend, the Class 2A Guilford Sectional was held right here in Rockford, and it was nothing short of thrilling! Among the competitors, we saw some fierce battles as both singles and doubles players fought their way to state. In fact, a total of two singles players and two doubles teams have earned their spot at the state tournament.
Hononegah’s Fighting Spirit
Kicking things off with Hononegah, freshman standout Erica Flohr came into the spotlight as the NIC-10 champion. Although she battled hard in the semifinals, she fell just short against sectional champ Ella Doughty from Huntley, with the match ending at a close 7-5, 6-4. But don’t count her out! Erica rebounded to finish third in her section, securing her spot at state alongside Harlem’s Mia Besevic, who finished second.
Moving on to doubles, the dynamic duo of Harper Powell and Lacey Foss from Hononegah, fresh off their NIC-10 win, reached the finals but took a valiant second place after a tight match that ended 7-6, 6-2 in favor of Huntley’s top team. Meanwhile, Hononegah’s second doubles team, Katie Hardwick and Emma Tapia, showcased their skills by clinching third place after a successful comeback win.
Boylan’s Doubles Duo Makes the Cut
In the Class 1A Rochelle Sectional, excitement didn’t skip a beat. Boylan’s doubles team of Luciana Burton and Avery Bridge faced off against their own teammates, Janae Burke and Miabella Matus, in a nail-biter for third place. The game swung in favor of Luciana and Avery, ending 5-7, 6-0, 7-6 (2), which means both teams are heading to state! What a fantastic display of sportsmanship and talent!
Other Local Qualifiers
Freeport’s stellar freshman, Angelina Sala, also made her mark by finishing second in the singles final, although she met her match against Dixon’s Brooklyn Arjes with a score of 6-1, 6-3. Additionally, Belvidere North’s Leilani Mora had an unexpected turn of events, needing to medically default in the third-place singles match. While her status for state is still uncertain, a fourth-place finish has guaranteed her a chance to compete this weekend.
State Tournament Details
The anticipation is building as the Tournament Central for the state tournament will be housed in the East Gymnasium at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights.
