Hello, Augusta! Softball Fever is in Full Swing!
Exciting news from the high school softball scene! The second round of the GHSA State Fast Pitch Softball Playoffs kicked off on Monday, and what a thrill ride it has been! Teams are vying for a spot in the coveted Elite 8, and the competition is heating up with each swing of the bat.
Big Wins in the Playoffs!
Let’s dive right into the action. Our local powerhouse, Richmond Hill, made waves by defeating North Gwinnett in two gripping games. The final scores of 6-2 and 4-3 secured their place in the 6A State Tournament slated to happen in Columbus.
Meanwhile, South Effingham didn’t hold back either. They took Milton down in a decisive fashion, winning their games 12-2 and 10-1, which also earned them a ticket to the 5A State Tournament in Columbus. Talk about a clean sweep!
Close Calls and Tiebreakers!
But not all teams had it easy. Seckinger faced off against Effingham County, winning the first game 10-6 but subsequently losing the second game 6-3. This sets the stage for a nail-biting Game 3, scheduled for October 21.
Similarly, Allatoona had a great start with a dominant 10-3 win over Wayne County, but they stumbled in Game 2, losing 6-4. Mark your calendars! Game 3 is also coming up on October 21.
Others in Action!
Turning to some other local heroes, Taylor County celebrated back-to-back wins against Screven County with scores of 6-1 and 8-3. Lanier County also showed their grit, winning 1-0 and 9-5 against Metter. It’s truly remarkable to see these teams rise to the occasion!
Clinch County’s Brave Battle!
And don’t sleep on Clinch County. They fought hard in an elimination game against Crawford County, winning 6-4 to push themselves into the second round. Clinch County took the lead early thanks to a series of walks by Crawford County’s pitcher, Kinley Howard. A two-run single from Analee George in the third inning sealed the deal, extending their lead to 3-1.
What’s more, the team’s bottom lineup (the 6-9 hitters) showcased their star potential by collecting five hits and driving in all six runs. Freshman pitcher Addy Barber shone brightly, throwing a complete game and making defensive plays that kept the team in the lead. It’s clear Coach J.R. Rogers has a talented bunch!
Clinch County will next face ECI in round three, setting up yet another thrilling match-up!
What’s Next?
The GHSA playoff format features doubleheaders, with a possible third game as a tiebreaker – how exciting! The Elite Eight and championships will take place at the South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus, Georgia, from October 29 to November 1. Don’t miss out on witnessing these remarkable athletes compete at the highest level!
Sadly, there are no Augusta teams left in the tournament after recent eliminations, which means cheering for friends and rival teams is the way to go from here!
Looking Ahead!
For fans keeping an eye on other local matchups, Grovetown, a 2-seed, is going up against the 1-seed Buford on October 20. Greenbrier, a 4-seed, has been eliminated despite a 19-12 overall record. And mark your calendars for October 22, when 4-seed Harlem takes on the 13-seed Heritage. There’s still plenty of excitement left in these playoffs!
Let’s keep the spirit alive and continue celebrating our local high school softball teams. They are truly making us proud!
