Exciting Times for Girls Tennis in Central State Eight Conference
As the autumn leaves begin to change, the buzz surrounding girls high school tennis is heating up in Central State Eight Conference. A total of eight talented players have punched their tickets to the coveted Illinois High School Association Class 1A girls state tennis finals. How exciting is that?
Chatham Glenwood Leads the Charge
In a thrilling display at the Mount Zion Sectional held on October 17, Chatham Glenwood emerged victorious with an impressive total of 28 points, allowing them to send four players to state. Originally set for a Saturday showdown, the tournament’s schedule was revised to Thursday and Friday to dodge the storms predicted for the weekend. Just shows how unpredictable the weather can be!
Glenwood’s Stellar Performers
Leading the way for Glenwood was senior standout Ellie Surges, who was seeded No. 1 in the singles competition. Surges clinched the singles championship match against Maroa-Forsyth’s second-seed Ella Sandgren with a nail-biting finale of 6-1, 6-7 (2), 6-1. This victory marked her third win over Sandgren this season and the first sectional championship of her career! With a hot streak of 13 straight wins entering the state tournament, Surges is definitely one to watch!
Fellow Glenwood senior Lydia Ryherd, seeded No. 3, made her mark by winning her quarterfinal match, but fell short against Sandgren in the semifinals, finishing fourth. What an achievement it will be for Ryherd as she participates in her first state tournament, even though she has attended the event in previous years as a fan.
Fresh Faces with Big Dreams
Don’t overlook the talented freshmen, as doubles team Olivia Hallberg and Sanvi Modi have also made their presence felt. After securing the CS8 doubles title earlier this month, they fought hard to grab second place at the sectional. The duo defeated Jacksonville’s Norah Alexander and Malin Camerer with a clear victory of 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and followed it up with a solid performance against Sacred Heart-Griffin’s Lucia Hassebrock and Catalina Mosquera. In the championship match, they faced off against the top-seeded Nilles siblings from Maroa-Forsyth, ultimately coming up short but qualifying for state nonetheless.
Jacksonville is also celebrating as Leah Range and Abby White secured a state spot by finishing fourth, ending a decade-long drought! Their last send-off to state was in 2015, so the excitement is palpable!
Dunlap Dominates the Sectional
Meanwhile, over at Dunlap, the team swept their sectional with a jaw-dropping score of 35 points. In a match-up of epic proportions, Anna Yu and Alassea Michel faced each other in the sectional championship, both qualifying for state and showcasing the depth of talent in their ranks. Yu has an impressive record of 34-4, while Michel isn’t far behind at 34-7.
Dunlap’s junior duo, Isabella Gusso and freshman Katherine Brewer, also earned a spot in the state finals. It appears that the young athletes from Dunlap are generating quite the excitement with their performances!
Other Qualifiers and Upcoming Competitions
Metamora’s Lauren Poole shined at her sectional, taking home the championship title and comfortably securing her place in the state tournament while fellow teammate Lexi Burton also qualified. Not to be outdone, Morton’s Chloe Kendall and doubles team Caela Myers and Faith Osterman also clinched spots from the Metamora Sectional.
As the excitement builds for the upcoming finals, let’s not forget about the stellar season finale performances at Edwardsville prepared their players for conference and sectional tournaments. The anticipation is palpable as these athletes prepare to shine on the state stage!
Who will take home the coveted titles this year? The only way to find out is to tune into the action at the Illinois High School Association Class 1A girls state tennis finals. The future looks bright for the talented girls of the Central State Eight Conference!
