Westfield Girls Golf Team Makes Waves at State Finals!

Westfield, Indiana – What an exciting time for the Westfield High School girls golf team! On October 4, they showcased their incredible skills at the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) state finals held at the stunning Prairie View Golf Club. The team delivered a fantastic performance, finishing third overall with a solid two-day total score of 640 (318-322).

Top Competitors and Their Scores

The championship title went to Zionsville, who finished strong at 607, followed closely by Noblesville with a commendable score of 629. Westfield’s finish marks a significant achievement for the team, continuing their streak of podium finishes, with this being the third consecutive year that the graduating senior class has secured a spot in the top rankings.

Over the past few years, the Shamrocks have put in tremendous effort, finishing second in 2022 and fourth in 2023 at the state finals. This year, they aimed to add another trophy to their collection, and they did just that!

The Team’s Star Players Shine

The Westfield lineup boasted five talented starters, including two determined seniors, Kelsey Haverluck and Lilley Ku, who played a pivotal role throughout the season. Kelsey, with her impressive prowess in the game, earned a place on the all-state team for two consecutive years and has plans to continue her golf journey at Western Carolina University. Meanwhile, Lilley, known for her leadership qualities, is set to pursue pre-med studies, proving that she excels both on the green and in academics.

But the team didn’t just rely on their seasoned players. They also had the fantastic energy of two freshmen, Farrah Camp and Laila Abriani, who made their state finals debut a memorable experience. Farrah recorded the lowest individual score for Westfield, with an impressive 76-80-156. Not far behind, Laila achieved a score of 80-79-159, both delivering remarkable sub-80 rounds right off the bat!

Other solid performances came from Kelsey Haverluck, who finished with a score of 82-80-162, and junior Sophie Raines, with 80-83-163. Lilley Ku wrapped up with a score of 83-84-167. The competition was fierce, but Westfield’s team rallied together, counting the top four individual scores towards their overall total.

An Unforgettable Journey to the Podium

After the first round of play on October 3, Westfield found themselves in fourth place. However, with perseverance and teamwork, they came from behind. Entering the final round seven strokes back from Carmel, they managed to outpace them, finishing with five fewer strokes! It just goes to show that the team truly knows how to play under pressure.

Coach Josh Bryant highlighted the team’s excellent front nine performance and commended them for showcasing their competitive spirit. The Shamrocks had to make adjustments this season, especially after losing a strong player, Addi Kooi, who is now making waves at Butler University. Nevertheless, with Kelsey’s under-par average leading up to the state finals, the team was ready to take on the challenge despite the obstacles.

A Bright Future Ahead

The Westfield High School girls golf team’s performance this year is not just about the trophies; it’s about determination, teamwork, and the relationships built along the way. With such strong leadership from Kelsey and Lilley, alongside the burst of talent from the younger players, the future looks bright not only for the graduates but for the entire program. The Shamrocks are well on their way to maintaining their competitive edge and thrilling golf fans in seasons to come.
