In a thrilling showdown, the Detroit Lakes Lakers made a wave of success, clinching a decisive varsity victory with a score of 107-79. The excitement didn’t stop there; they also soared through the junior varsity competition, winning that meet 92-70. Talk about a sweep!
The Lakers weren’t just treading water; they made quite the splash by winning an impressive nine varsity events and taking home 11 of the 12 junior varsity events. It seems Detroit Lakes was in top form, setting the stage for an unforgettable afternoon in the pool.
A Close Start!
But it wasn’t all one-sided. Alexandria held its ground early on—only trailing by a mere four points after the first four varsity races. They bagged two of those initial events, showcasing their competitive spirit right from the get-go!
Star Performers Shine Bright!
Among the shining stars of the meet, Hannah Hoff dazzled everyone by securing a win in the 200-yard individual medley with a personal-best time of 2:28.00. Not to be outdone, Brynnley Ziethamer zipped through the pool to victory in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 26.91 seconds.
As the meet progressed, Detroit Lakes outscored Alexandria in six of the eight remaining varsity events, proving their swimming prowess. They notably finished in the top two spots for the 100-yard breaststroke, dominating the competition.
Hannah Hoff continued her incredible performance, diving into another win, this time in the 100-yard backstroke, with a consistent time of 1:03.83. It’s safe to say she was the rock star of the day!
Bright Futures Ahead!
Even amidst the defeats, Alexandria showed resilience with its swimmers achieving an incredible 14 season-best times throughout the meet. Mae Denne shined bright as she set her personal-best in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:45.18, while Victoria Davidson also scored a season-best with 2:45.55. This is what we call making progress!
JV Highlights!
In the junior varsity match-up, the spotlight fell on Ella Vanderheiden, the lone Cardinals swimmer who clinched a victory, taking the 100-yard breaststroke win with a time of 1:33.61. Alexandria missed some opportunities but managed to secure six runner-up finishes during the meet, including racing strong in the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relays as well as the 200-yard medley relay.
Maddie Mohl, not one to miss out on the fun, improved her best time drastically, swimming the 200-yard freestyle in 2:51.33, which was a remarkable seven-second improvement! She also trimmed down her time in the 100-yard backstroke by almost two seconds, finishing at 1:29.87. Way to go, team!
Bailey Wall also made her mark, clocking in at 31.48 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle, shaving off 1.4 seconds in her performance.
What’s Next?
As the dust settles from this exciting meet, Alexandria’s varsity swimmers are already gearing up for another challenge. They will compete in the Section 8AA true team meet at Brainerd High School on Saturday, October 11, starting at 10 a.m. with diving events, followed by races at 2 p.m. Not to mention, the junior varsity team will wrap up their regular season against St. Cloud Apollo on Tuesday, October 14. The stakes are high, and everyone is on the edge of their seats to see what’s next!
