NCAA Announces Extended Transfer Portal Window for FBS Players
In an exciting development for college football, the NCAA’s FBS Oversight Committee has approved a change to its transfer rules, giving players more time to evaluate their options. This modification, confirmed on Monday, establishes a new transfer window from January 2-16 for both undergraduate and postgraduate athletes. This 15-day period replaces the earlier January 2-11 window, allowing players an extended time frame to make important decisions regarding their college teams.
Another key aspect of the new guidelines allows athletes who play in postseason games after January 12 to enter the transfer portal. These players can initiate the notification process within a five-day period following their final game. This change is particularly crucial for those involved in the 12-team College Football Playoff, which often stretches late into January. For example, this year’s College Football Playoff National Championship is scheduled for January 19, 2026.
While this new modification to the transfer portal must still receive approval from the Division I Administrative Committee, which will next meet during the second week of October, it reflects the NCAA’s ongoing efforts to support athletes as they navigate their collegiate careers.
Over the past month, several other changes regarding the transfer portal have also been approved, signaling the NCAA’s intent to adapt its policies to better serve student-athletes. These adjustments are essential as student-athletes increasingly seek flexibility in their college sports decisions.
As we move closer to the January window, all eyes will be on the implications of this new rule for athletes across the country.
