Cleveland, Ohio – Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders is ready to step up whenever needed, despite being third on the team’s depth chart. In a recent appearance on a sports talk show, he expressed his confidence in his abilities and believes he could outperform some current NFL starters. “I know if you see the quarterback play in the league right now, I know I’m capable of doing better than that,” Sanders told ESPN Cleveland.
Currently, Joe Flacco leads the Browns as the starting quarterback, with Dillon Gabriel backing him up. While both quarterbacks have had their struggles through the season’s first three weeks, head coach Kevin Stefanski has not made any moves to alter the depth chart. Despite Flacco’s underwhelming performances, Sanders is not counting himself out. He insists he has been staying focused and prepared for the chance to get on the field.
“I don’t think playing or not playing is in my hands,” he said. “I think, based on the situation, if things pan out where I play, then I’ll be out there ready to play. I’m ready to play right now.” His mindset involves daily preparation, regardless of his current position on the roster. “So, it’s really just keeping the mindset of staying locked in and staying into everything,” he added.
Adding to the buzz around Sanders is his father, Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, who has predicted that Shedeur will eventually start for the Browns this season. In a recent podcast, Deion shared that he has a feeling about when it would happen and advised his son to “be patient and be ready.” However, he did not specify a timeline.
The Browns drafted Shedeur with plans for his development, viewing seasoned player Flacco as a stopgap while assessing their rookie options. Sanders’ moment could come soon, with the coaching staff still evaluating the performance of both him and Gabriel as the season unfolds.
