Sedona Kicks Off Exciting Cross Country Season!

The vibrant town of Sedona is buzzing with excitement as the Red Rock High School Cross Country Team has officially kicked off their season! The team made their debut at their first meet on Saturday, August 30, held at the picturesque Buffalo Park in Flagstaff, and it’s safe to say that both the high school and middle school athletes are raring to go.

Team Structure – Small but Mighty

The high school team currently boasts five dedicated athletes, with two more soon joining the squad after getting their medical records sorted out. They are poised to take on the challenges ahead, while the middle school team is already off to a great start with seven enthusiastic runners in the mix. The emphasis this season is on inspiring a profound love for the sport among the younger runners. The middle schoolers will focus on enjoying their runs, while the high school students will amp up their training and competition levels.

Practice Makes Perfect

The team’s commitment is evident as they practice six days a week. Each athlete is clocking an impressive 40 to 50 miles a week to build their stamina and speed. Saturdays are reserved for independent runs or attending meets, where they face off in races that cover the challenging distance of three miles. This level of dedication speaks volumes about their commitment to the sport!

Individual Dreams and Team Goals

As the season unfolds, the runners contend with personal goals alongside the team’s needs. For the girls’ team, they must gather five members to compete collectively, but with only two currently on board, the focus has shifted to individual results. Senior runners have highlighted their aspirations for the season. One of the standout athletes is Aubrie Doyle, who is entering her sixth year with the team. She’s setting her sights on clocking in the 20-minute range for her race times, determined as ever to push her limits.

Meanwhile, senior Ryan Pfaff is embracing his second season with the intent of finishing under 25 minutes. Last season, he finished with a time closer to 32-33 minutes, so this marks a significant improvement for him. His goal for the early part of the season is to dip below the 30-minute mark, showcasing his determination and progress.

Freshman Juni Spielman is also full of ambition as she steps into her new season. Having had a commendable previous season, her goals center around the dual ideas of having fun and improving her 5K performance. With a previous finish of 14th place and a time of 22 minutes 18.7 seconds, she’s well on her way to making an impact.

Junior runner Sunny Flores, starting his second year, is optimistic about the season’s kickoff. He acknowledges that the season has started positively, despite the initial hurdles, and he looks forward to diving deeper into practice as the days go by.

What’s Next for the Team?

The Sedona Red Rock High School cross country team is gearing up for their next big challenge at the Fountain Hills Invitational scheduled for Saturday, September 13. As the team sets their sights on this event, it promises to be another exciting chapter for these aspiring athletes.

Sedona’s community eagerly awaits to see how the cross country team will progress throughout the season. With such passion and dedication exhibited right from the start, all eyes are on them as they race towards their goals. Here’s to a thrilling season ahead, full of personal triumphs and team spirit!
