Exciting Win for Watertown High School Soccer Teams Against Mitchell

Watertown, the heart of our lovely community, has a reason to celebrate! On September 9, Watertown High School’s soccer teams launched into their final two-week stretch of the regular season with a bang, achieving nail-biting victories against the Mitchell teams. It was an afternoon filled with glossy soccer skills and spirited competition at the Allen Mitchell Athletic Complex, leaving the fans cheering and the players high-fiving!

Girls’ Team Triumphs in a Thrilling Match

The girls’ team kicked off the festivities with an exhilarating 4-3 win, bringing their overall record to an even 4-4 and a conference record of 3-3. This success positions them comfortably in the 10th slot out of 20 teams in the state Class AA standings. Not too shabby, right?

Things started off bright for the girls, as they roared into halftime with a stunning 2-0 lead. Goals from Mylee Kannas, assisted by Sophia Gallardo Popham, and Sophia Popham, brilliantly set up by Mya York, have firmly placed them in the driver’s seat. After the break, they extended their lead to 3-0 thanks to a goal from Mya York, with help from Khloe Landmark.

But Mitchell wasn’t about to go down without a fight! They rallied back with two quick goals from their star Taryn Thomas, narrowing the score to 3-2 and upping the tension. Just when it looked like Watertown’s lead might slip, Brooklynn Randall stepped up, scoring the decisive goal with assistance from Katie Fischer. What a comeback!

Despite the excitement on the field, the girls faced some challenges off it, dealing with a few illnesses and injuries among the team. Goalkeeper Madison Enstad held her ground, making incredible saves and keeping the team buoyed through tough moments.

Boys’ Team Joins in the Winning Spirit

Dominating the game early on, the boys rocketed into a 2-1 lead at halftime, thanks to first-half goals from Patrick Bednarczyk and Isaac Thorson, although Mitchell’s Karim Ical managed to sneak one in. They didn’t let up in the second half, with Thorson scoring again and Xane Fligge adding another to the tally. Roger Carranza shone with two assists during the match, proving to be a vital part of the team.

The boys’ goalkeeper, Owen Muller, had his share of glory too, making six critical saves and showcasing his skills to the delight of fans. What a show he put on!

What’s Next for the Teams?

Both teams have some challenging matches coming up! They are set to host teams from Sioux Falls Lincoln, Brandon Valley, and Sioux Falls Washington, along with away games at Huron and Aberdeen Central. The excitement builds as the state playoffs are set to kick off on October 7, and there’s even a chance for both teams to add an additional match if all goes well.

This season is already proving to be a turnaround for the girls, matching their total wins from last season despite challenges. Leading the girls, Sophia Gallardo Popham is currently scoring like a champion, with 10 goals and three assists to her name.

The boys are not lagging behind either, with major contributions from players like Roger Carranza, Patrick Bednarczyk, Xane Fligge, Dawson Hartman, and Isaac Thorson. It’s quite the roster!

As the playoffs draw closer, the hope is strong that both teams will find their rhythm and bring home some more victories. Go, Watertown! Your community is cheering you on!
