The city of Detroit is buzzing with excitement as the Lions have officially signed wide receiver Jameson Williams to a new three-year deal worth up to $83 million. This agreement was reported on Saturday evening, just in time for Williams before the start of the regular season. Williams, who was picked as the No. 12 overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, has had a rocky start to his pro career, overcoming a torn ACL and serving two suspensions. However, he truly blossomed in 2024, posting impressive stats of 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns on 58 catches, establishing himself as a key player for the Lions.
Alongside fellow receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, Williams provides quarterback Jared Goff with a strong receiving unit. While St. Brown excels at making quick and intermediate plays, Williams adds the deep-ball threat that can stretch defenses. The Lions are eager to maintain the momentum from last season, where they fired on all cylinders, scoring the most points in the league and racking up the second-most yards.
Despite Detroit exercising Williams’ fifth-year option to keep him through 2026, this new contract signifies the team’s commitment to their young star and enhances their offensive core, which also includes tight end Sam LaPorta and running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.
On a separate note, it seems that defensive standout Aidan Hutchinson, also a first-round pick in 2022, has not reached a new contract agreement before the season begins. Although negotiations have been positive, nothing is finalized just yet. Hutchinson made a splash in his rookie season, tallying 9.5 sacks and improving to 11.5 sacks in his second year, but faced injury setbacks last season. The Lions remain hopeful that an agreement can still be struck as they focus on defending their NFC North title.
The team is set to kick off their season on Sunday against the rival Green Bay Packers at 4:25 p.m. ET, with Williams looking to make an impact in their quest for success.
In other news, the Pittsburgh Steelers have updated defensive lineman Cameron Heyward‘s contract for the 2025 season, adding incentives worth $3.2 million. The Cleveland Browns have also signed running back Quinshon Judkins to a fully guaranteed four-year deal valued at $11.4 million. Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers are closely monitoring star running back Christian McCaffrey, who is questionable for their season opener due to a calf injury.
As the season unfolds, fans are eager to see how each team adapts and performs. Stay tuned for updates and highlights.
