Los Angeles Chargers Take Down Chiefs in Thrilling Season Opener in Brazil

São Paulo, Brazil – The Los Angeles Chargers kicked off their 2025 NFL season in style, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 27-21 in a gripping contest on Friday. Quarterback Justin Herbert was the star of the show, showcasing his talent with an impressive performance that included throwing for 318 yards and three touchdowns.

With just 2:14 left in the game and the Chargers holding a six-point advantage, Herbert made a pivotal play on third-and-14. He scrambled around the right end, sliding for a crucial 19-yard gain to effectively seal the victory for Los Angeles. The ending was reminiscent of the Chargers’ last win over the Chiefs in September 2021, where they also won by six points.

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh praised Herbert’s all-around play, stating, “Justin was phenomenal today in every way with pinpoint accuracy.” Herbert completed 25 of 34 passes with no interceptions, achieving a passer rating of 131.7 while also rushing for 32 yards on seven carries.

This victory marked an end to the Chargers’ seven-game losing streak against the Chiefs, who were previously known for their dominance, having won an NFL record of 17 consecutive one-possession games.

“This was an important one because it was the first one,” Herbert said after the game. He emphasized the significance of the win against a strong opponent while praising the overall team performance.

The Chargers jumped to a quick 10-0 lead, but the Chiefs clawed their way back to make it 13-12. Kansas City kicker Harrison Butker missed a crucial extra point, allowing Herbert to take command and guide the Chargers down the field for another touchdown throw to Keenan Allen, who made a return to the team after a year away. This was followed by another touchdown from rookie wide receiver Quentin Johnston.

After the game, Herbert recounted the decisive scramble: “I was trying to get the ball to Q and they ended up doubling him. I figured it was man coverage… so I just escaped the pocket.”

On a slightly concerning note for the Chiefs, wide receiver Xavier Worthy suffered a shoulder injury during the match, adding to the team’s challenges.

As the Chargers celebrated their well-deserved victory on the flight home, their successful season opener provides a strong foundation for what fans hope will be a thrilling season ahead.
