Las Vegas Raiders Showcase Rookies Ahead of Regular Season Opener
Las Vegas is buzzing as the Raiders get ready for their first game of the regular season. With the season opener just around the corner, the nerves of nine rookies won’t be evident based on their performances during practices. Out of these rookies, two have earned starter positions, while another four might see significant playing time off the bench.
Head Coach Pete Carroll has emphasized competition since day one, which aligns perfectly with his choice to field the team’s best, regardless of their rookie status. “I love playing young guys, and our young guys will play,” Carroll stated with enthusiasm. Expectations run high, particularly for rookie running back Ashton Jeanty, who was selected sixth overall after a standout college career, making him the highest-drafted running back since Saquon Barkley in 2018. With the Raiders struggling in rushing offense last season, Jeanty’s role holds significant weight. However, he’s approaching the challenge calmly. “I’m not going to make it any bigger than it is… I’m just excited,” he shared.
Meanwhile, rookie wide receiver Dont’e Thornton Jr., who stands at 6-foot-5, has also snagged a starting role. He led college football last year in yards per reception, and during training camp, he showcased impressive chemistry with quarterback Geno Smith. “He’s made so many plays throughout camp… we really got to manage those expectations,” Smith remarked. Thornton echoed similar sentiments, focusing on team success over individual accomplishments. “The expectation is to win, no matter what,” he explained.
On defense, rookie cornerback Darien Porter appears poised for substantial playing time. Defensive tackle Tonka Hemingway is also expected to contribute significantly. Coach Carroll’s guidance for the rookies emphasizes teamwork and the importance of leaning on experienced players: “Lean on the guys around them and don’t think that they’re the whole show,” he instructed.
As the Raiders prepare for their Week 1 clash against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium, fans are eager to see how these rookies will perform on a grand stage. From the latest practices, it’s clear that the emphasis is on both preparation and excitement. With a blend of young talent and experienced leadership, the Raiders aim to start the season strong.
