Rochester High School Girls Swim and Dive Teams Dive into Action with High Hopes
It’s that time of year in Rochester! The school bells are ringing and the girls swim and dive teams are making their grand return to the pool to kick off another exciting fall sports season. With the scent of chlorine in the air, excitement is brewing for both athletes and coaches alike as they set their sights on what promises to be a remarkable season.
Century Panthers Swim to Success
Leading the charge for the Century Panthers are co-head coaches, Dale Magnuson and Megan Magnuson. Joining them are a dedicated team of assistants including Joscelyn Martin, Logan Petzold, Greg Andrews (diving), Anna Lee, Michaela Dervin, and Lily Linden. Last year, these talented swimmers and divers finished with an impressive record of 9-0, proudly claiming the title of Big Nine Conference champions for the fifth consecutive year!
Not only did the Panthers reign supreme in the conference, but they also snagged the Section 1-1A title and impressively finished 16th out of 64 teams at the Class 2A state swimming and diving meet. Talk about a display of unity and skill!
This year, the Century Panthers are counting on returning stars like Sophie Blixt, a senior with three All-State accolades under her belt and an All-Conference status. Joining her are fellow seniors Chloe Magnuson, Sarah Homme, and a pair of talented sophomores, Jia Yin Jian-Gross and Alexandra Pool. They are also excited to see what eighth-grader Quinn Barrone brings to the table after earning an All-Conference honorable mention last year.
Mayo Spartans Set for Champions’ Challenge
Meanwhile, the Mayo Spartans are gearing up under the guidance of head coach Juliet Parlette and her assistants Scott Diercks, Jessica Koepp, and Andi Jacobson (diving). Last season, the Spartans made a splash by finishing 18th at the Class 2A state meet while coming in fourth at the Section 1-2A meet.
Returning to this dynamic team are talented athletes like senior Madeline Gau, who is a two-time All-State swimmer and has committed to Columbia University! Other notable returners include juniors Elise Weingarten and Penny Hauser, as well as sophomore Halle Yuan, all of whom are looking to elevate their game this season.
John Marshall High School: The Rising Stars
And let’s not forget about John Marshall High School, led by head coach Lauren Kalwasinski and her trusty assistants Kendrick Bachman and Ella Rowley (diving). Last year, John Marshall finished 13th at the Class 2A state meet, the highest out of all Rochester teams, along with a respectable sixth-place finish at the Section 1, Class 2A meet.
Top swimmers for John Marshall include senior Julia Ogren, a three-time All-State athlete and University of Louisville commit. With fellow seniors Maysen Pettengill and junior Abi Tri, the team hopes to continually improve their times and prepare for upcoming duals.
A Strong Community of Swimmers
Amidst the competitive spirit of swimming, one standout feature of Rochester high schools is their strong camaraderie. Swimmers like Sophie Blixt, Madeline Gau, and Julia Ogren may represent different schools, but they are bonded by a shared passion for the sport. Their supportive community empowers them to not only compete at high levels but also to foster connections that last beyond the pool.
The Rochester Swim Club has established itself as a powerhouse, nurturing aspiring, college-bound swimmers while cultivating loyalty and teamwork among its members. As all teams dive into the season with aspirations for greatness, they are not just competing for titles but also building memories that will last a lifetime.
